Coupe exhaust manifolds needed

Post by roymck » Sun Nov 18, 2018 10:37 am

I guess I may need a new set of exhaust manifolds , I haven’t tried the usual suppliers like QRG or Graham Walkers yet but wondered if there are any other suppliers . Cheesman used to make them for Robin Rew so they might be worth trying . They don’t have to be stainless but would prefer a longer style 3 into 1 . Any recommendations of a suitable supplier who did you use or do you have a set sitting around looking for a good home .
Thanks

Yes they did - I have Cheesman exhausts (bought from Robin Rew) on the mulberry car (Se6a). A few years after buying the pipes, I decided to replace the manifolds, so as Robin had retired by then, I bought those direct from Cheesmans themselves. A little while later, I did hear that they had stopped catering for Scimitars, (although they are still in business, to the present day). This was probably a couple of decades ago, so it's a moot point whether they will still have the jigs etc

Contacted Cheesman and they say that they disposed of all the old patterns about 10 to 12 years ago so they can’t help anymore . Although supply them with an original they could copy it . No doubt at a cost !
Mike the pipe did good work but unfortunately he passed away a few years ago.
Fewer and fewer suppliers out there for our stuff nowdays.
Anybody got any other thoughts ?

Double S (Stainless Systems) is a possibility, the GTC had a full system from them, very good quality.
I know it's not the same car (or engine) but worth investigating.

GW & QRG used Double S for years - not sure if they still get them from there now?

If anyone needs a set of cheesman balanced headers aka rewsets to use as a template, my 6a is in pieces and will be for quite a while looking at the non existent bearings .... and robin supplied mine in 1989, although a little surface rust, they are perfect for measurements etc. As long as I get them back by end april when car due to be back together, you are welcome to borrow them. Just let me know. Funny, I was just rubbing them down today before a power cut and snow stopped all work outside!

Another thought, armour motorcycles make bespoke exhausts.....I have used them to manufacture stainless manifolds for my ajs v twin and racing manifolds for my gp ducatis all by fitting to machines (no existing).

Nice idea but the dimensions and angles are different to the early cars

Are they long or short primaries on the manifolds you have . Are the ones you have for sale?

I’m looking for some coupe tubular manifolds too. Sounds like several of us want these, so should be able to strike a deal with a supplier. Was thinking of mike the pipe but didn’t realise he was no more. Maniflow have made some great stuff for my midget in the past, so I might ask them. DanD also has a contact he has used that we were going to ask
I thought I saw a thread where allingtonGT had got a stainless set made up a couple of years ago - but can’t find it now! Think he had a set that he used as a pattern and then sold on.
Roy am down the road from you in Bookham, so would be good to catch up on this.Tim

Hi Tim , spoke to Maniflow this week and the man we need to speak to was on holiday so I am waiting a return call . Allington Gt can get Stainless ones made up but they are quite pricey but at least that could be an option . Maybe with a group buy we could trim the price a little.

Tim can you pm me a phone number ?

Thanks Roy

Did you ask QRG? I think Nigel said he was going to get some made a while ago?
