What spark plugs are you guys using in the Essex engine ? I remember back in the day they liked the Motorcraft AGR22 but no longer available as far as I can find

I have a spark plug question. I have the green ones fitted I was planning to change to the other set are the spare set I've had in the garage for a few years. My eagle-eyed friend noticed that the spare set had a different number on them. I got them with a job lot of 5a spares and assumed they where Essex ones. My google search seems to indicate they are hot plugs for the Essex. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I use bp6es all the time never had any issues .I checked my cheap eBay ones and they were genuine .


1962 mini, bedford CA , KR200. morris 1000, mini pickup.several escorts,ford grandad.ford cortina X2 ,astra, SE5A x 2 ,ford focus.

No need for hotter plugs on a road car - use 6’s.

Don't forget, the BPR has a resistor in the feed, the BP doesn't; if you have resistive ignition leads then don't use the BPR as you will possibly develop misfiring.
The difference between 5 and 6 isn't much - hotter plugs might cause pre-ignition on the track, but unlikely on the road.
If you have copper HT leads they are worth trying, I don't think I'd be able to feel any difference (but might hear it interfering with the radio!)

I started off mistakenly using BPR6ES plugs (with resistors built in) and carbon leads - now changed to BP6ES spark plugs and it starts a LOT more easily, with no other changes to the engine.

I fitted NGK BUR6ET spark plugs to my 5a three years ago, in the belief that these were the recommended type. Have these fallen out of favour? :?

In the project thread 'SAR Massive irregular misfire', with ref to spark plugs with & without built-in resistors on page 8 it seemed that :

That’s pretty much how I have worked with traditional ignition systems - the resistor bit is either in the loads (carbon/suppressed/etc) OR the plugs (an R in the part number in the case of NGK plugs) but not both.

I’ve just looked up the original plug spec in the handbooks (autolite AG22) and the NGK alternative is BP7ES.
