SS1 Brake failure n/s front!

Post by RonPerry » Fri Jul 19, 2019 8:11 pm

Hi All. Just had an interesting experience driving my SS1 Turbo.
When braking the car suddenly violently veered to the right with some strange graunching noises from the front n/s.
I tried to limp home but in the end called out RH recovery.
Getting home I started to investigate what had happened. On removing the front l/h wheel it was soon obvious that the brake disc was no longer connected to the hub/wheel. All 4 Hex sockets bolts were missing! So application of the brake stopped the disc rotating but as it was not connected to the wheel the car swerved right.
I pulled off the hub and as you can see in the attached pic the bolt holes in the disc are oval, the worse one being presumably the last to let go.
Just wondered if this has happened to anyone before?
I'm now on the look out for a couple of new discs. Euro car parts seem to stock them but I'll need to check the sizes accurately.
Ron

Do not trust any disc supplier other than GW, Qrg or RPW, All others on internet will be wrong.

Trevor is right buy from other than the club traders and you will get the wrong discs no matter what they say or advertise. Your photo did not show on my pc.

ECP (and just about every other generic car parts emporium) will sell you ones from a Metro, Maestro or MGF and claim you must have the wrong ones on your car because that’s what their catalogue says (which is wrong).

When uploading a picture, wait until the “Add Inline” button appears - that means it’s uploaded. Depending on the file size, connection speed etc it can take a few (sometimes many) seconds to upload it fully.

Sounds like someone forgot to use loctite? Oval holes suggests it’s been on its way for an awful long time?

Thanks for the information. The ECP disc does, as hinted at, bear no resemblance to the one on the SS1. Investigating availability from the club traders.
