Which Oil filter for SSI 1800TI??

Post by RonPerry » Wed Jun 12, 2019 5:09 pm

Just about to carry out my first oil change. After an extensive search I've found the oil filter!
Looks difficult if not impossible to remove easily as it will foul the steering tube.
The existing filter is a Bosche 0 989 452 023. Is there a shorter alternative that others are using which would make the job easier?
If so please let me have the details.

Thanks

Ron

Halfords HOF287 or equivalent - I think it’s Nissan Micra. The CVH filter and various others will fit (HOF 287 IIRC?) but you need the shorter ones.

If someone has fitted the longer filter. Slacken the engine mount nut on the OS and Jack the engine up a bit. Ask me how I know

Which Oil filter for SSI 1800TI??

I use Mann oil filters sorry its a bit wet outside to be looking to see what number but I think its quoted as a MIcra 1000cc filter. Got at from below - unplug the oil pressure switch and you can get at it with a suitable strap wrench or just hammer a screw driver through it to start it turning. You will get used to it as its got to be changed - with the oil every 3k - at least that's how often I do it - perhaps others don't change the filter with every oil change. Just bought a wrench at a car show for £1 which I hope will do the job better than the strap wenches I have tried to use in the past

I've found that if you apply brake cleaner to the filter and wear rubber gloves you can actually slaken by hand

I struggled with the 1800TI and Sabre. Then I found the way. I always loosened the filter by hand when stone cold, then soon as I had Cracked the seal, warm the engine up on a run so oil most fluid then it twisted off easily by hand. Starting when engine warm was a real knuckle killer!!

Have investigated Halfords but the HOF287 is no longer listed on their website nor available according to my local store.
Has anyone fitted an oil filter recently?

Sorry Peter, only just read your post. The Mann 811/83 looks promising as seems a very similar size to the Bosche that is fitted other than it is approx 25mm shorter so should not foul the steering column when installing or removing?

I've got three different types of oil filter removing tools so should be easy to turn, its just hitting the steering column when removing/refitting that is the problem.

Queens Road Garage do the right size ,I've used them on mine ,the removal wasn't all that difficult with a strap filter tool

Ron, That filter was the same that came when I got the car. I just replaced it like for like. I didn't clock it was "bigger" as I had nothing else to compare it with. I took the battery and battery tray out to make access easier and then had no problem getting the old one off and the new one on. I did jack the car up slightly to get access to the nuts in the wheel arch that hold the battery tray down. I assumed it was the norm to dismantle the car to change the oil filter. The battery isolator pull wire would probably need to be disconnected as well. Geoff
