3rd gear position back of rod catching side of underbody
I have just replaced the gearbox selector arm bushes & replaced the gear lever bushes also.(GTC)
After reconnecting the selector rods, when putting the gear lever in to 3rd gear position, the back of the 3,4th gear selector rod catches on the side of the underneath tunnel body work, jamming the system.
I can not move the gear change mechanism over any more to make more clearance.I have not made any changes to the rods, installing them exactly as they came out.
Before starting any work on this, the 3/4th gear rod was already very close to the body work.
Does anyone have any idea where I have gone wrong with this?
Thank you for your help.
Kevin.

Connect the rod on the inside of the lever, not on the outside??

I'm not an expert on this, but when you reassembled the linkage, did you use the alignment rod method to set the position of the levers with respect to the neutral position, as detailed in the manual, before connecting everything up?

I went back & used the alignment method with the gear lever arms pinned in the neutral position. I had to put a bend in the 3rd & 4th gear rod & adjust the length to provided enough clearance from the bodywork. I am not sure why I had to do this but it is now working ok.
Thank you all for your help.

Maybe somebody had adjusted the rods in the past, in an attempt to compensate for the worn linkage bushes, so they were now out of position when reassembled with new bushes?

Apologies if I'm too far off topic here but can someone tell me where the overdrive inhibit switch ( sensing 3rd/4th) is on an 84 GTC ?

Thanks a lot Phil, My electronic copy of the 6a manual does not include that drawing and searching on this forum did not turn up any helpful info.
Am I right in thinking there is not a Manual for 6b / se8 ?

That picture should be in the manual. There’s a parts manual for the 6b/GTC but no workshop manual - just a service bulletin/ supplement for the 2.8.

3rd gear position back of rod catching side of underbody
Sorry chaps, my mistake.
Exploded diagram of gear-change found in section G transmission - why did I not look that far down
I was out in the car this evening, about 30% of the time O/D fails to engage, hitting the gear-lever towards my left knee usually brings it IN.
Otherwise change to neutral and back quick, fixes it. I'm expecting to find dirty contacts or a loose securing bolt

3rd gear position back of rod catching side of underbody
Outcome
Car now all back together again and O/D now perfect. The rearmost of the three bolts holding the gearchange assembly to the tunnel was loose. I'm certain over time the rod for left / right movement of the gearlever was progressively pushing the switch away leaving it de-activated. My thanks to all respondees above.
