Front hub bearings

Post by Clueless1 » Sun Mar 24, 2019 3:42 pm

Hi, I finished stripping my SS1 today!! But......when I separated the hub from the carrier the bearings fell apart 😩 I always thought that they were a one piece bearing, whereas mine are the ‘normal’ ones. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or has a PO swapped hubs/carriers etc.
Thanks.

Front hub bearings

Post by Alan SS1 » Sun Mar 24, 2019 4:11 pm

if the stub shaft is a SINGLE diameter, which looks like it is then it is an original bearing, they are 'one piece' in name only.

The OUTER is a single machined piece but there are TWO inner races, in use the two inner races 'meet' rather than using some pre-load as you'd do on a 'standard' wheel bearing

it is not uncommon for them to come apart, I've spilt mine to reduce running clearance, ie shaved a tiny bit off the inner face to allow the slack to be taken up

if it is Chevette hubs/bearings then the INNER race is two different diamters, large diameter inboard and a smaller bearing outboard.

Hope this is helpful?

Thanks Alan, I will check later. One of the inner races is stuck on the axle but should come apart with a bit of heat. Are the bearings the same as any other car or Reliant only?

Reliant only and not cheap -available from the club traders. Took one to a local bearing shop who said they could get anything but after two weeks trying admitted defeat

Ouch! Did you try Simply bearings, online? I was wondering if there’s a part number stamped on it, will have to have a look.

As Peter said nope SPECIAL to Reliant, so if possible try and save the inner race, it will go back in quite happily after a re-grease

just don't trash it if possible, remove with care from teh shaft or carefully slide it back from whence it came :)

from memory a new bearing is around £80 EACH side,
note that rear bearings ARE available (front wheel from a Mazda ? ? ?? )

Front bearing part number is NTN 4T CR1 0676. GW bought all of Reliant’s stock and I don’t think there were ever any equivelant bearings made by other manufacturers.

Front hub bearings

Thanks all, I should be able to save the inner race on one side but the other side has collapsed entirely. This was the side where the hub nut was only finger tight.
Graham Walkers her I come! With a long, long list.

It was made by commission so you won’t find one elsewhere unless someone has found some ex-dealer stock and has no clue what it is.

I think there might have been a batch remanufactured as the last ones I looked at GWs just have the Reliant part number on them?
