Alternative Alternators

Post by Mr Bridger » Wed Sep 26, 2018 5:25 pm

My shiny new alternator has arrived and as well as the normal connections the plug goes on there are two studs, one marked W and the other B+. Do I need to connect these to anything?

B+ is a high current connection in parallel with the plug. If not wanting to use it, insulate it carefully. The W terminal is a feed to a rev counter on some diesel vehicles. Again, insulate it.

I always connect the B+ to a 6mm cable routed carefully round the engine bay and safely connected to the positive on the battery.
It gives around 14v at low revs to top up the battery. And is a Free power source.

And on many Land Rovers/Range Rovers which also use the A127 with stud terminals. On those B+ is the main feed to battery & D+ is the ignition warning light.
