Have you documented a Scimitar related procedure and would like to share it with others? Pictures are most welcome!

Coupe boot jammed

Post by BryanM » Sat Aug 04, 2018 4:50 pm

7 years ago I bought a rally Coupe (JET 513F) which had quite a competition history. It needed bodywork repaired and resprayed but drove 500 miles home no bother. The idea was, although it was a long distance event car, we had a John Wade engine, T5 Cosworth gearbox and very rare low ratio GTE LSD axle out of a GTE we had had, that we may do a few stage events. It has RAC Historic Papers but would need updated to MSA ones but only an update procedure.

Anyway the point of this is it was put into storage after the work was done, but my son decided to go racing instead so it has lain covered up for 7 years but today we brought it home and intend getting it MOT'd for a Historic rally tour at the end of the month over here in Northern Ireland and then probably put the car on the market, but first major problem is can't get boot open. Lock is working ok, and button is pressing in when unlocked and was working before it went into storage.

Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated as don't want to risk damaging the new, although 7 year old, paintwork!!

Thanks

With the button pressed in try banging on the lid you might get lucky
Otherwise it’s time to drill a hole

Sadly that hasn't worked. Where do I have to drill and would you have a picture of the mechanism to see what could have gone wrong?
Thanks

Here’s what the lock looks like it just pushes against a plate

Try pushing the boot lid sideways to see if the locking tab can be shifted a little?
Or - is the hot weather expanding the boot lid towards the rear of the car and preventing release? Gently pushing the lid forward might do it?

Jeff's pictures show a hole with the boot lock removed.
However this is something you cant do.

Option 1 - make a large hole in the boot floor and release the lever per my picture

OR

Option 2 - drill a hole per the blue car and poke the lever but you end up applying paint

This part is what the lever that the button pushes on to release the catch - the pivot wears , and comes out of the cut out which causes your problem [ usually if the push button has been forced a few times when the boot is locked ! ]

Hope that helps
I have a few other random pictures

Thank you gentlemen you are stars !!

Because of the pictures you sent I was able to understand what should happen with the mechanism. Went out to look at cutting a hole in the boot floor, didn't want to drill my nicely painted rear panel, and luckily the sprayers had forgotten to refit the number plate lights. Two ideally placed holes, one that you could shine a light up to see the workings and another one you could put a long screwdriver up to release the boot!!

Very happy bunny.

Thanks again

Discovered the problem.

The car originally came with 2 sets of indicators and 2 sets of side/brakelights per side!! Yes very ‘unusual’ and in changing this, my fiberglass man had bent the arm the push button works on so a very gentle bend back and Bobs your uncle ! Did try it lots of times before committing to closing the boot.

That's the ex-Dick Sherwin car :D By profession Dick was an airline pilot, which is why his cars all have "JET" numberplates. Here it is as it was:

That's the one although can't get your pictures to open.

Only took the picture of the front before pushing it into the garage. Has to get inside tidied, seats and belts, new Minilites on and the inevitable list of jobs on a car unused for a while!

Target is Deja Titanic run over a lot of the Classic Circuit of Ireland stages on the 1st Sept. with around 100 passed event rally cars, Walter Rorl is guest driver and speaker at the dinner. One of the chaps over here has an ex Rothmans 911 he is giving him a loan of for the day.so will be a bit of fun!

Will do more pictures when it's done.
