Upside down photo fix!

Post by David Tew » Tue Mar 10, 2020 7:35 am

Many photos on the forum are shown sideways or upside down so here's a tip to help show them correctly.

The problem is mainly with photos shot on a mobile phone as the phone often doesn't correctly encode the EXIF tag - it just saves time. The answer is to run the photo through some editing software to correctly write the EXIF tag before uploading it to the forum. Most programs will do this but a good option is ResizeImage. This runs online so no need to install anything. Just upload, rotate/crop etc. and download.

Be aware that it does store your photo for about 60 minutes to give you time to download them but there is no nefarious action behind this.

I hope it's helpful. :D

Link was to an email address which I’ve removed David. Is this the site you meant?

Ian has implemented some code to try and fix the problem with pictures being rotated.

Please use the “Report Post” function (the exclamation mark in every post) to highlight any you see to the mods - as they’re normally only apparent on windows machines and many of us normally view on phones or tablets.

I notice my photos (taken on my phone) are displaying (on the same phone) on the forum, 90 deg out from the orientation I took them in - anyone else?

Yes Jim, a couple of months ago i put a photo on and it showed the right way up when viewing the forum on my iphone but is on it's side when viewing forum on laptop,
then put a photo on this week and it is on it's side when viewed on both, i tried rotating it on laptop photo app but still uploaded on it's side on the forum.

I found I had to rotate it (in MSPaint) and save it, then rotate it to the correct orientation and save it again.
