Hello,
I am looking for any info about replacing front and rear shock absorbers on a Sabra ( Sabre 4) . The original ones are not available, I know, so please any alternative with brand and type etc; no need for adjustables like Spax or Gaz , but if you have a correct type/nr, the info is welcomed too. ( Spax adjustables are not longer road legal here in Belgium, but who knows since when they are on a Sabra?)
Simple plug and play replacement preferred, else does anyone know where to find the rubber bushes for the shocks and what are the correct imperial measures? No metric unless possibility of macining them on a lathe.
Thanks for any info, there must have been replacements in the past on the cars.

Hi Jacques,
The alternative dampers from AVO for the straight 6 coupe (which I used on the Sabre 6) from the 2015 Catalogue are:
Front fixed spring-pan: SE360
Rear fixed spring-pan: SE285
I use the ones with adjustable spring pans (PD371 and PD372)
These will all have adjusters to set up the rate of damping, so perhaps cannot be used in Belgium.
If you have the open & closed length measurements then perhaps contacting AVO might be helpful to find alternatives.

I should have said also - my Sabre Six has the TR4 front wishbone suspension, not flailing arms, so I don't know whether the data above is relevant.
A better expert may be along shortly.

Hi Jacques the dampers for Sabra/ Sabre 4 will be different to Sabre 6 due to position and weight of the engine. In your question you say adjustables are not allowed do you mean adjustable spring seats or adjustable damping or both? You are asking if rubber bushes are available are you shocks ok and just need new rubber bushes? If so what shocks do you have at present as Spax do supply replacement bushes. Maybe a photo would help.

Hello,
The shocks on a TR type suspension will probably be different, but who knows. The Sabra/e' has flailing arms as the early Sabre 6's, maybe even early SE4 scimitars.
The adjustable ones, I meant adjustable damping, like on Spax, these are not allowed any more, but info is welcomed.
Basicly I need the "normal" ones front and rear.

I add a picture of the one NOS front shock I have in stock.
Especially the welded rim is not easily found on shocks.

Hi Jacques we have been looking at some of our old, presume original shocks they look the same as yours only rusty and have found some part numbers, so Richard is doing some research and hopefully we will have some luck. Is there a part number on your NOS shock that we may be able to confirm from our numbers.

Hello,
Yes, there is number on it, maybe just a production number? Here it is: 4054730.
This is a front shock of course.
I checked the AVO site. Some more investigation needed, but at least the SE360 has a rim/pan on top and bottom for the spring.

Ask Gaz what they can do. Basicly they can make exactly what you need.
If you need assistance, I am a Gaz sales point in the Netherlands. It won't be cheap I'm afraid.

I can confirm that Gaz can help as I have a set of their dampers on my car and the late Geoff Cooper had them on EFH, although they are adjustables.
They are very helpful and I can recommend them on our experience with them. I was going to suggest them, but was hoping that Richards research would find what was originally fitted with the spec, so that new ones could be made from the original details so you can comply with your MOT regs. We are still looking.

I’ve dealt with Spax directly and like Gaz, they will make dampers to a specific spec if they don’t have something that meets your requirements. Speak to their technical director, Tony Shakeshaft Who is an ex GTE owner.

Just a thought. Is there anyone in the club who has original paperwork from Reliant, that has the specification of the spring weights and damper dimensions for Sabre 4 and Sabre 6. I was told a long time ago that one of the club dealers had bought all that information from Reliant, but my enquiries came to nothing.

Richard myself and Geoff Cooper spent a lot of time back in 2011/12 trying to find written information to the original specifications that’s when I was told that a club dealer had purchased Reliants records. We ended up testing and comparing all the old parts we had and measuring the cars with and without dampers and springs to come up with what we are using on the car now. But it would be nice to have evidence to confirm our conclusions, and have a starting point, if not happy with the setup or in the case of cars in Belgium comply with new mot regs
