Sabre Six Transmission

Post by Old and Slow » Mon Sep 28, 2020 12:13 pm

Having just been browsing "Reliant Sports Cars" for something totally different, I read on page 38 that the Rally Competition modifications included TR4 front suspension, 7HA axle with LSD, the Raymond Mays head and Jaguar gearbox.
That seems to describe 660XYB to a tee, so I was wondering, do many of the others have the same set-up? In particular the Jaguar Mk2 GBN Moss gearbox with OD?
Just out of interest, really.

Although the Sabre Six was homologated with the Mays Head and triple Webers, and therefore in theory it was possible to buy a car with this spec, I have a feeling that no cars were actually sold to the public by Reliant in this guise. I stand to be corrected, but I think I remember reading that somewhere.

The same presumably applies to the LSD and the Jaguar box, which were also homologated? Anyone know for sure?

In "RSC" I was looking up to see where Alex Griffiths bought 660XYB for the '65 Monte (re: the comment on your FB thread) and apparently it came through his Dad's Reliant Agency, Alexandre Motors, Sandford near Bristol, so you could say this was "sold to the public".
Perhaps we ought to send configuration details of each of our cars to our Registrar, just for the record?

Interesting. There was a thread on here a few years ago about this topic, relating to research in the early years of the club by Robin Rew and others about the acceptability of various mods to Sabres and whether they were period-correct to manufacturer supplied and homologated standards or not. I think it related to VSCC specs for racing. I'll see if I can find the link.

This was the thread I was thinking of. HSCC, not VSCC:

Philip, here is the Register's data sheet for your car (stripped of potentially private stuff). We have similar technical data for most of the known cars, but we don't always know if it is accurate and up to date. So if owners would care to send us data for their car we will ensure that the Register is updated as necessary.

The only other car that is listed with a Jaguar Moss gearbox is the ex works rally car 650GUE.

the Register's data sheet
Thanks for the info Tony, I'll send you a bit more detail for the data sheet where I can (e.g. gearbox type etc).
