Changing seats in an SE4

Post by Jezza » Sat Aug 10, 2019 10:10 pm

I am considering replacing the original seats in my SE4. Namely, although they are in good nick, they are not the most comfortable. Obviously they would remain with the car when ever it was sold.
Can you advise me which is the most popular substitute. I have been told MX5. But on running a measure tape over one they appear too wide. I don't think i could get away with a seat squab being much wider than 44 cm's. The MX5 Seat I measured was 52cm.
Any advicie or past experience would be appreciated.

Morning, I put MX5s in mine with the separate head rests, not the tombstone looking ones. I didn't like the originals with no "whiplash" protection after a rear end collision in the GTE. I don't remember them being tight width wise although it is a while since they were fitted and they are miles more comfortable. Can't find a decent photo and I'm not with the car, sorry. Regards, Brian.

Hi Peter,
thanks for that. They look great. Could you tell me the width of the seat Squab. MX5'S I have measured are around 52cm I thought that might be too wide.
Many thanks,
Jerry Ray

Hi Jerry, measured them, at the seat back they are approx 40 cm, and at the front of the bolster they are 48 cm,but this is fairly soft and they will compress back to 40cms.I’d recommend them, we also have them in a MGBGT we drove 6000 miles to Athens and back in comfort, regards Peter

Hi Peter,
those sizes make sense, and are narrower than those I have measured. Are they from a particular Model of MX5 or have a specific type number ?
Are you going to Scimfest by any chance ? Your seats definitely fit the bill.
Thanks,
Jerry

Sorry Jerry could’nt say what model MX5 they come from, both have radio speakers in the headrest, and are the tombstone type Brian mentions.I’d suggest cruising the auction sites and ask sellers to measure, cheers Peter

Hi,
I like the look of the MX5 seats. I have been quoted £1400 to re do my Coupe 4a seats with head rest. I think that is the "I don't want to do it" price.
Do you have any problems living with the MX5 seats? Do they fold forward and adjust OK.

Got them in our Coupe - no problem but why do you want to know if they fold forward - I don't know anyone small enough to get in the back

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the reply. You didn't answer my question - do the mx5 seats fold forward? I have had a 6 footer in the back but I agree its not a place for passengers other than leg less children. For luggage bags and other strange items its a good place to shove them if the seats allow access.
Kind regards Trevor S

Yes they are adjusted by a lever which allows for the back to be set at all angles - the other seat type we have is MGF which don't have a lever but can be "wound" to the same angles.

I fitted leather MX5 seats in my TR4. They are the separate headrest versions, which are from a MK2 MX5 I believe. Very comfortable, have travelled to Belgium and the I.O.M. in them. I've now transferred them to my Coupe which came with the "tombstone" cloth MX5 seats. They fit perfectly, recline, and slide forwards to allow easier access to the back "dark hole". Mike. P.S. the latter seats are for sale £140.
