Sprint Car Head Gasket???

Post by PeterSM » Thu Aug 15, 2019 12:38 pm

I have just been checking my sprint car over ready for Sunday and discovered an issue. When I removed the dipstick it was covered with classic brown mayo. So I removed the rocker cover cap and checked that:

Siphoned some water out of the header tank and it looks like this:

Which leads me to think it is a head gasket issue but the compression test gives.
Cylinder PSI
1 135
2 130
3 140
4 160

Which seems OK.

Any thoughts?

I have now also pressurised the cooling system via the expansion tank cap to 15psi and it has held this pressure for over 8 minutes.

do you have an oil cooler which is water cooled ? could be that if you have

on a static test any hg leaks might not show-but when warm and thousands of rpm with high cylinder pressures it may be passing

Thanks Tony. Yes Craig thought it might be the water cooled oil cooler. Guess I will have to try substitution to see if it is that.

I have a good spare cooler Peter and I recently replaced mine in situ but swore I'd never do it in the car again 😬 we can give it a go though!

If you can bring it to Curbs and give me a hand fitting I would be very grateful. It looks pretty inaccessible!

Its on the trailer plus my canopy to work under!

If it was the water oil cooler wouldn't the pressurising of the water system leak down?

we could do with a gasket or atleast some hi temperature silicone if you could bring that along with a socket set?

I would have thought so tbh, it could still be the headgasket, it might just have gone between a water way and an oil gallery and not the flame ring which would mean your compression would be unaffected, I would swap the headgasket first...

OK I can understand blanking off or joining the water pipes but what do you do about the oil cooler side?

good luck with that, those hoses are about the most difficult bit to get to although your inlet manifold is different than mine
