Thanks for the pics Jim but yours don't appear to look like mine. Are yours for K series or CVH? If I could put my hands on my cameras I could post some pics of what is fitted to mine. Will have a dig around in all the boxes still kicking around from the move over this weekend.

Standard K series, I’ve had a burnt engine here, Phil’s Sabre (when it was Chris’s) and I have Chris’s here - all the same and obviously made or modified by Reliant.

Hi everyone,

Having carried out a thorough inspection of the car I sat down with Leigh of Oxbys three weeks ago to discuss what he had found and to agree a plan to move forward. Since then he has carried out fairly extensive remedial works which have included a major service and other fluid replenishments, fitting new rear brake cylinders and brake pipes as well as other mechanical areas that required attention/adjustment as well as sorting out the alignment of the alternator. I am now pleased to say that the car is back on the road and much improved. Although there is still some popping and banging on overrun the engine now pulls well with no discernible misfiring. The tickover is occasionally erratic but Leigh felt this would settle down once the car is used on a regular basis.

Remembering the problems I have had previously with the small sports variants (mine not the cars) my intention now is to run the car over the next few months and see how I get on with it. Really hoping that I can work around the physical difficulties but if not will look to sell on the car before the winter sets in. However should things workout then over next winter will embark on carrying out some further refurbishment. This will include sorting out the dropped drivers door. If the cause is hinge related as appears on the face of it then I would like to thank Mark Wilson for info of how to rectify this. As well as this the driver’s seat and trim needs some minor repairs along with making good the areas of the bodywork/paintwork that detract from the overall good appearance of the car. Also I will be fitting new front calipers once the pads need replacing. Current ones have rust pitted pistons. Thanks again to Mark for agreeing to supply these on an exchange basis. Once these areas are done I will possibly look into fitting a new clutch. Although the current one is OK I have to push the pedal rather too far down before the gears disengage. A bad left knee doesn’t help. Not sure if one can adjust it. Anyone advise? Then all it would leave is a possible replacement hood. The current one is a very poor fit and has some damage although not too bad. Previous cars I have had were much better. Last but not least still hoping to pick up a hardtop at some point.

However all the above work is dependent on replenishing the kitty. Current outlay is just under £600 which is more than I had anticipated having to spend when I bought the car. However 3/5ths of this is labour cost which unfortunately for me is an expense I have had to get used to paying over the last few years.

On a separate note I understand from previous posts on the forum that this model of Sabre is fitted with a diagnostic plug. A Rover 3 pin one. However would appreciate it if someone would clarify its location. One post says it is located where the loom enters the bulkhead whilst the other claims it is by the dizzy. Not able to have a look at present but will do so tomorrow. Also the post says it is not OBD and will need a special lead etc to use. Only reason for asking is that Leigh said it would be useful if he could make use of it to check out if everything is as it should be.

It’s a type 9 box, so adjustment is just nut and locknut on the cable.

I doubt the idle will settle with use, the K series are very susceptible to erratic idling - first check is the MAP tube to the ECU.

Same thing - the loom enters by the dizzy. It’s not OBD

I’ve bought one but have yet to use it... :oops:

MAP tube - I removed my slightly grotty one in several pieces once I started to apply the slightest pressure on it. Replaced with a length of Silicone tubing now.

With regard to the erratic tickover I found it did settle down at bit with regular use.
I also found that if you put a bit of weight on the engine when idling, putting it in gear and lifting the clutch slightly (I know it's bad practice but) it produced a smoother tickover. I wonder if it maybe due to the different gearbox arrangements, as I understand transverse gearboxes have more gears revolving when in neutral.
IIRC there's no air temperature sensor I think that may be another factor.
I did try another (2ndhand) ECU it was just the same :!:

Simple one to check is if it has a clutch cable isolator at the clutch fork. Often missing and does have an effect on operation . I have a few nos ones left if needed.

Clutch now adjusted. No further adjustment can be made before replacement but the pedal now has an acceptable movement. Much easier on the knee and leg stretch.

Boot hinges and mounting plate removed and all parts sorted. Hinges working fine now although still believe the struts are possibly too long/strong. They still try to force the rear of the boot lid up. Don't allow the hinges to swing smoothly which they do if I disconnect the struts. Anyone got an original pair (used or new) that I could buy?

Can anyone recommend a K series specialist in this part of the country or not to far away? Although motor running a lot better still hesitates on pickup from low speed and when you floor the pedal. Still pops and bangs on overun Tick over still slightly erratic so would like to get the engine properly sorted.

Once the above taken care of just leaves the drivers door hinges to sort, a small amount of stitching and piping repair to the rear of the the drivers seat base and finally some minor repairs to the paintwork. Hood is acceptable. Not a great fit especially on the drivers side. Fixing the door hinges would not resolve it so possible replacement at some point in the future. Still looking for hardtop. Prefer later version but would settle for older as long as it fits.

The reconditioned starter motor the previous owner fitted has started to play up. Can't say whether it was a good refurb or not but the bill shows it was quite cheap. Based on what I have found since buying the car probably not a good one. Can someone let me know make and number of OEM part fitted or good quality replacement. Appreciate that I could possibly get one from QRG but spent enough on this car at the moment so funds not flush.

Thanks Jim. From the discussions it appears that there was no real reference to the correct part no. for the motor. Unless I missed it of course. However it looks like a refurbished one is a cheaper route. As this one has supposedly been refurbed not sure whether it could be done again.

LRS543 - but it comes in two sizes so you need yours to compare. I have one on the shelf if you need dimensions/pictures.
