C3 Gearbox Oil Cooler Pipes

Post by nuclear_jimbo » Sat Oct 03, 2020 12:03 pm

Hi all, the oil cooler and pipes on my SE6a are in a state, the pipes are bent and kinked and the cooler itself has got a slight leak which will only ever get worse so I plan on replacing the lot. Does anyone know the size of the pipe threads on the gearbox casing? I measured the oil cooler end as 1/2" x 20 tpi (so I think that'll make it a SAE -5 flare fitting with 5/16" pipe) but I could do with knowing the gearbox end to order the appropriate fittings - I'm a bit loath to remove them until I've got replacements on hand in case the pipes break on removal.

Thanks in advance!

It doesn't matter if the pipes break. Unless towing, just link the stubs for in and out with some flexi pipe. There is very low pressure in the cooler circuit, so worm drive clips will be adequate.

Cut the pipes off, leaving the gearbox connectors fitted - then fit an aftermarket oil cooler and plumb in with rubber hose. There’s no real pressure, so jubilee clips will hold them on.

Thanks, both - I'd made the assumption that it operated at line pressure. That makes life a lot easier.
