Type 9 as fitted to the Jags -
Wasn’t it the LT77?

Sorry Phil I cannot remember where or what I got the gearbox from- I fitted the V8 in 1989 and never regret do it - would still have it but the chassis was past it and I had nowhere to replace it - The engine and box went into a Morris 1000 I think.

Got it, thanks Peter, I think my 6 was converted in the mid to late 80's so it was interesting to compare the two, it's good to know that your car ran ok on the scim rad and you didn't need to cut bonnet vent's in like some say are needed, the xj6 gear change swop on to the Rover box i think was common but as far as i can see, this one looks to be a cut and shut Rover item, i have a low millage RX8 that will be donating it's gearbox maybe next year.
The front end rides high like a 60's 'gasser' drag racer so they must have not addressed the springs.

I took the side bits out of the front wheel arches but otherwise just ran it like a normal GTE WRT cooling. Vents in the bonnet achieve nothing unless you are standing still - the Jenson has side vents. I quite like the car to sit higher than average anyway - makes getting over speed bumps easier

Relax the throttle and it changes up again.
just like your BMW does?
Yes, but so easy and quick to change down with the paddle shift. The BW35 doesn't facilitate manual changing at all. Appreciate it's like comparing chalk and cheese and six or so decades in design.

Manual or Automatic ?

Hi everyone

Thanks for the replies

It seems that the best option is to leave the autos as they are, fix them otherwise and sell them on and just stick to the manual ones for myself as I personally prefer them that way. I have auto in virtually every other car I own so its nice to have a few silly manual ones!

As regards the C3 or BW gearbox.
I am certain 6 a onwards had the C3 so not the 6b. That is definitely true of my R reg and V reg 6 a cars which pretty much covers them all. I don’t know about the SE6 but I am sure someone here does. Personally I drove a number of BW 35 boxes in Volvos, Hillmans and fords from the late sixties and early seventies and I preferred them to the C3 I have driven in seventies cortina’s. Personal preference is important. I imagine a later 4 speed auto box in a scim would be nice though!

Thanks again

Mark

I thought the C3 came in during 5a production?

yep, 1972 with the updated engine (chassis 93x1001).

The C3 can be held in first or second (which is better for pulling away in snow and ice), the BW35 can be held in first - position 2 will go between first and second but effectively it’s held in second unless you’re crawling.

So my '73 chassis 931710 shouldn't have it's BW35 in it? Or maybe it hasn't

Don’t sweat it, Adam - I’ve seen an M reg 5a later than yours with a BW in it. What Reliant put in the book and what came out of the gates do differ. Their stock control wasn’t exactly on point..
