Manual or Automatic ?

Post by markpin » Fri Sep 25, 2020 5:16 pm

Hi

I was wondering if its worth converting from Auto to Manual if you want to sell on a 6A? I have one, possibly two auto's which I intend to sort out over the next year but I also have every thing I need to convert one or both to Manual. I am just curious if there is much difference in value between the two. Obviously conversion away from factory does make a difference I accept but I am wondering if Manuals are much more sought after, thus justifying the conversions?

Mark

No, the work isn't justified value wise or desirability wise. An auto in a 6 series is well suited to it, whereas a 5 might be more suited to a pudding stirrer.

I hated the 3 speed ( GTC ) auto we had but love the 4 speed MB. I understand the 4 speed auto box is not that difficult to fit - if you can find one

The BW 35 auto box is dreadful. Never had a 6b with the Ford C3 but can imagine it's no better.

It’s not that easy to fit an A4LD to the Essex and although it’s much nicer than the C3 (or BW35), the only real problem with them is the lack of overdrive (ie high revving, lower mpg).

As to the question, Andy has answered - not a lot of difference in price or desirability whether OEM or converted (unless it’s a particularly original car).

Why be negative about something of which you have no experience?

My SE5 with a BW35 was great. What’s dreadful about it? The C3 is a bit more refined but as you’d expect for another decade of progress.

I went from 6A with a Rover V8 ( I fitted ) to a GTC auto and the difference in revs did my head in - the MB auto is completely different.

My first auto was a 5a. IMO it has too big an affect on fuel consumption, acceleration and traction in snow and ice. I also disliked not being able to hold a lower gear unless you changed manually. Put me off autos until recently when my daily driver became a BMW 330d touring (modern day Scim) with the eight speed auto which I love.

surely that’s the same for any gearbox?

Not only that, kickdown drops and holds it in low gear.

Relax the throttle and it changes up again.
