GTC door mirror

Post by philipmasonfrance » Wed Sep 02, 2020 5:00 pm

More years ago than I care to remember the spring in the driver's door mirror broke, leaving it flopping around. It's so long ago that I can't remember how I re-attached it, but I think a self-tapping screw on the inside was involved. Aesthetically quite effective - but no spring-back mechanism for x years. I'm thinking a bolt with a nyloc nut and a strong spring might do the job - but does anybody have any (neater/easier) suggestions please?

GTC door mirror

Hi Phil
Cheque arrived, thanks.

You could only use a bolt through the base and head to make the unit flip if you removed the glass operating cables.
I have lots of heads that the mild steel pivot has rotted away and the large spring clip has disintegrated too.

IF you still have SOME of the mild steel pivot boss left you could IN theory thread it to accept a nut that would retain the spring enough for the head to flip.

Not tried it myself, but have thought about it a bit now I have found all the mirrors I have collected over the years.

Thanks, Mark. I'm tackling the fouling on full lock issue at the moment (in between trying to make the passenger seat - ex-driver's seat - more rigid/less floppy) so I'll take a look at the mirror after that. Thanks for the suggestion. Never a dull moment!

Thanks, Alex, but mine are the (original???) Granada (???) type mirrors. Not sure if they're clear on the photo.

Did not realise yours was a Left hooker.
So YOUR drivers door is a Passenger side GTC
I have a few of those

I once bought a NEW Blue centre console from GW and it was only after I sold it we realised it was for LHD

Northyorkshireman may still have it if yours is past it??.

Go on then. Christmas is coming. Please PM with the price for the passenger (UK) door mirror. It's with manual adjustment please. As an aside, when Geert van Hout converted her to LHD, he did the whole job 100% and installed a new LHD centre console too - and moved the handbrake from right to left. Only problem is, it's impossible to select reverse gear with the handbrake applied! So reverse hill starts are challenging, to say the least. Even BMC/BL didn't bother to swap the handbrake on the MGB for LHD!
