Fuel tank sender unit

Post by Scim78 » Mon Aug 03, 2020 11:38 am

Hi,
Just bought an se6a but the fuel gauge goes no lower than 1/2 full. Looked every where , so what fuel tank sender unit (just in case I need one) is used in these cars?

Welcome :D

Sounds like it’s working, so it just needs calibrating. You’ll need to take the sender out and see if the gauge goes to max & min with the float arm up and down. Bend the arm to make sure it’s not hitting the tank top/bottom and calibrate the gauge if necessary (details in wiki).

Club traders stock replacements, I don’t know which other cars used them.

Someone didn't like the prices charged by the traders so found one from IIRC a Triumph Herald which sort-of works (it gave "a" reading but it's a Smiths sender so would), but I don't recall feedback on whether 1/2 was actually 1/2 and full was full?

Was that for a 5 or 6 (with the extra low level tab)?

It was a 5a from memory- he also narrowed a 6a tank to fit the chassis.

Always wise to replace the fixing ring and gasket when replacing. If you aren't in a hurry, check it first then order the lot. Got mine from qrg a few months back as it wasn't working.....when I took it out, I realised that it had just furred up with evaporated fuel, blasted it with a paraffin air gun loaded with fresh petrol and I've now got a spare.....doh!
