Vacuum advance pictures?

Post by PlasticMan » Fri Jun 12, 2020 9:34 am

This might sound odd but my Scimitar has not got a functioning vac advance (it didn't come attached to the car when I bought it like a lot of things!). My manual barely touches upon this, now obviously you should have a tube/pipe going from the vacuum thing on the distributor but were does it attach, the carb, the manifold, some were else?

Has anyone got any good photos of a normal set up, or can you describe this well? This would help immensly!

Thanks in advance!
Steve

Pertinent question.......does your car have electronic ignition fitted?

A lot of electronic ignition modules automatically advance, therefore they recommend disconnecting the vacuum tube and plugging!

Peter, I'm pretty sure that the lumenition optronic system has a solid state advance system inbuilt. I think that even if the vacuum advance is still fitted, it doesn't move any of the relevant parts in the lumenition, does it?

Peter, I was also asking my original question to Steve, as if a previous owner had fitted electronic ignition, then they may have removed and blanked off the vacuum advance, hence why he didn't have a functioning vacuum advance........but it does apply to all.

I don’t recall the Lumenition instructions telling you to blank off the vacuum advance? It’s bolted to the standard baseplate, so still moves under mechanical or vacuum advance?

You're right Jim.....theres an article on the stag forum about the lumenition. I can't remember which system is in my car and the engine bay is sealed whilst I'm rubbing the paintwork down, but when I fitted it, it said to remove the vacuum advance as the triggering system knew the advance required...or so they said!

Are you sure it wasn’t more “set timing with vac advance disconnected”?

I'm wracking what little brain cells I've got left and think that the system I've got requires the Bob weight advance but not the low idle or cruise vacuum advance. It was all done by Robin many years ago and until I get back into the engine bay, I don't even know the name of the system. The engine is also running a stage 2 cam, so don't know if that makes any difference?

It’s only for fuel consumption at cruise, you don’t actually need it for driveability.

Thank s for the input people. FYI it doesn't have electronic ignition. I think my main priority is getting the strobe gun out and set the timing up properly again. I also need to check the carb to see if the vac advance hole is properly blanked off as that will cause an issue.
