The right radiator cap

Post by Thomaswo » Wed May 27, 2020 1:14 pm

Does anybody know the right specification for this cap? GTE 6a from 1977. Is it 0,9 oder 1,0 bar? LBS 9 or LBS 15?

None of the above - standard for a 6a is 13psi (approx 0.9 bar).

I googled the ford part number from the reliant parts manual, then checked by searching on here.

I googled the ford part no. now, but most of the links were wrong. Most caps are short reach (app. 24 mm height) but we need long reach (34 mm). Else it wont fit.

It might seem like a daft question but how is the coolant drawn back from the expansion tank on this year car, does the cap have some sort of two way arrangement?

on the 6 series, yes, the vacuum formed as the engine cools will draw fluid back from the expansion tank

Because the cap has 2 seals (most caps don’t).

Beware that some caps with the correct part number at a supplier may be just the tiniest bit short so that the bottom seal does not seal on the housing......it baffled me for a while when I put a new one in......water gets pumped out into expansion tank and overflows.

I’d say that was a badly manufactured cap though, not the wrong cap. Which supplier so one can avoid, Dennis?

Mine has the 'top' seal which sits on top of the housing and the lower one which sits down inside the housing Phil, the bottom one is sprung to maintain pressure so how does the coolant get drawn back?

I believe there's a one way valve in the cap which allows it to draw it back under the vacuum too but having never owned a 6/6a I can't confirm 100%

I think it was pointed out by someone else recently?

I think every spring pressure cap on any make of car of the era has the one way valve , even if the car doesn't have an expansion bottle.
