GTC Oil pressure

Post by smurphy » Thu Jul 04, 2019 2:04 pm

My GTC, with the Cologne V6, mileage c150K, not smoking and with good cylinder pressures operates with indicated oil pressure at 32psi, regardless of revs.
Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks
Smurphy

Oil pressure

I’d suspect the gauge. It should be double that when cold or even when hot at high rpm and it should always fluctuate with revs as there’s no damping system.

I may be being paranoid but the engine sounds different, some how tinny!
Just a thought - Can you run a compression test? I think it's possible you might have bent one or more valve stems when the timing gear failed. This could make the engine sound different.

GTC oil pressure

Post by smurphy » Fri Jul 05, 2019 6:45 pm

My GTC with 150 k miles, not smoking or excessive oil consumption, and with good cylinder pressures indicates unvarying oil pressure at 32psi, at all 'normal' engine speeds above idling.

Any thoughts?

Mine was 50 psi - could be just general wear after 150K.

I should have asked how long have you had the car - how long did it take for the oil pressure to drop - have you done anything that might have effected the oil pressure - different oil/filter for example

If it does that from cold start (when it should be hitting the pressure relief valve) I would suspect the gauge isn’t reading correctly, or the engines pretty worn. Assuming of course the correct grade of oil is used with a good quality filter.

If it was worn enough to only reach 32psi when cold you wouldn’t get anything when hot?

I’d say gauge (as Jim replies before) but could do with a bit more info - pressures hot/cold/at revs/idle/oil grade/filter?

GTC oil pressure

Post by Dennis Nicholas » Fri Jul 05, 2019 8:42 pm

In my Cologne engined GTC I am using 0W/40 Mobil 1 fully synthetic and get near enough 50psi at anything over about 1,500 rpm and dropping down to about 20 psi at 500 rpm tick-over (stupid place to put oil pressure gauge where such big parallax for reading true needle position when driving!)
Did I ever mention Synionic AFMT.
Milage just over 101,515 and I have been using AFMT for 36,816 miles the car has been in my hands.

At only 32psi something is wrong...gauge reading wrong;.badly worn big ends or any other places oil pressure could escape; pump worn, pressure relief valve fault, wrong filter.....etc. Presume the oil pipe /fitting to gauge is not leaking/blocked?

What grade/type oil you using; what is pressure at cold ......a.at tick-over ..........b. at over 1,500rpm.
Does pressure go strait up to 32 at start up.
