Webasto sunroof for SE6a

Morning all. My SE6a, which is currently waiting patiently for me to get funds for painting, had two glass sunroofs fitted. One behind each other above front and rear seats. Taking them off was an issue due to seized clamp screws between outer and inner rings, and I had to use an angle grinder to take the heads off each screw. Whilst I can refurb the sunroof to refit it, unfortunately one clamp handle broke so will need to make or source a replacement.

It was suggested by Tom at our West of Scotland Noggin that I fit a webasto sliding sunroof instead, as this would be a neater solution than two sunroofs. I have done the usual internet search for the sunroof trying to find dimensions to see if it will fit in place of my two sunroofs or whether it will be too small and havent found anything. Does anyone know what size of sunroof normally fits my Scimitar and what size of aperture it requires? I have seen secondhand sunroofs from MGB's on Ebay for example which may fit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The Webasto in the 5a is 42"x37" and the hole is 37"x32" - not sure if the 6 series is bigger or not but I’d be looking for something modern and possibly even electric?

Thanks Jim. I like the fabric roof for traditional looks but a modern sliding roof in black tint would look good too!

cheers

just measured my car.....the aperture is 40 1/4" x 33" so unless there are larger webastos available, this might not be the solution. Hmm.

Interesting that yours had 2 sunroofs that's a very modern idea that land rover took up on the discovery I think might be worth a look at their sizes, alternatives would be to make one fixed and one opening.

If you really wanted the Webasto, buy one with part of the roof and graft it into yours.

All Webasto roofs have a wooden frame and this is unique to the make and model of car so one from another make or model may not fit due to roof curvature . As said probably better to graft on a new roof with or without sunroof opening.

Thanks for your replies folks. I spent a bit of time looking through panoramic roofs on ebay today, theres loads on there but as RoyMcK states the curvature would need to be the same to suit the roof. Plus these specific sunroofs will mate up with anchor points inside the roof of the car they are designed for, whereas the scim will need a clamping trim piece to go on the outside in order to grip on the fibreglass. There is a new hollandia soft sunroof but it is too narrow for my 40 1/4" wide opening.

I have looked at new sunroofs but none of the available sunroofs fit my apperture.......

The easy solution is to make one fixed and one opening as suggested by Colin.

A wider webasto may still be an option if this is what was fitted to an SE6a

Thanks and cheers

The Webasto on our SE6 was leaking and the mechanism rusted. Although new parts are available It was going to be too expensive, 5-600 quid. I did look at Mini and Peugeot electric glass roofs but they weren't big enough to fit the Webasto hole.

In the end I bought another non-sunroof car and used it's roof to fill the hole, replacing the roll over hoop had been cut away when the webasto was fitted. The wooden frame of the webasto provides some roll over strength in place of the hoop so if you are cutting a big hole for a sunroof it is worth considering the structural integrity.
