Sideways Pictures

The issue of pictures posted from some phones being in the wrong orientation had passed me by because it appeared to be an issue with the phones rather than the forum. Whilst that is still true, the forum can be modified to compensate for it and I have now done that. Many thanks to Scimjim again for pointing me in the right direction for the fix.

Hi Ian, I realise you may be busy with the crash problem, but as an aside, it's worth noting that the upside down images problem still seems to persist?

See this thread for example

The fix that I applied will only work on pictures uploaded since it was applied. Pictures already uploaded in wrong orientation will remain that way. I have no ideas to fix it retrospectively other than deleting and re-uploading the images.

Ah, I see, thanks. I thought that one was "after", but maybe it was just the order I read the posts while catching-up?

I don't know. I don't actually fully understand the problem or the fix!

Ian, I though I should mention in this thread specifically, in case you haven't spotted it elsewhere on the forum, that we are still getting this sideways picture problem (see this thread, for example)

Thanks Roger. I'll look further into it. Someone out there must have found a fix for it.

This is what a sideways photo is, but it's the right way round too! I'm not sure I'm helping here...

Yes, that's me driving. 1st lap, braking a little late and carrying too much speed. It stopped the guy behind having any space to challenge! I continued ok and didn't try it again.

I'm going to need some help with this :w

In testing on the development system I can't get any images to be wrongly oriented. I have an Samsung android phone and a Lenovo android tablet at my disposal. No problems using either of them.

I need someone who has these problems to describe precisely the actions and processes that reproducibly result in wrongly oriented images. Without having a reproducible problem I can't test any potential fixes.

The only time I’ve seen them rotated is when I view on my windows PC - iPhone and iPad always show them the correct way up.

I think Jim's right; it seems to be a Windows/iOS conflict. My W7 desktop has them sideways, but I revived a rarely-used v1 iPad, and they're fine on there.

Close, from what I've been reading. It seems that most people blame Apple because they have implemented the orientation part of the EXIF data in the image differently to others. But I don't think it's just an Apple problem though. There's enough of an issue that I'm sure some knowledgable person will eventually come up with a robust fix for phpBB. It is beyond my skill set  . I'll keep reading around the problem in case the solution is out there somewhere already.
