Forum editing capabilities?????

Post by td99 » Sun Feb 03, 2019 6:34 pm

Just spent a whole lot of time making a post with with a couple of photos.
I cannot believe how effing difficult it was!
Now the new site is much better than the old one, that's true.
Dragging and dropping the photo sometimes seems to work and sometimes seems not to. A JPEG seems to be received more preferably than a PNG, the PNG seeming not being given the inline option. Of course this could be just an individual hitch,
but I'm not used to such problems for such simple actions. I could have made that post in word or any normal environment in five minutes, it took me 25 minutes simply because of the ? PNG photo placements. Until now I never experienced such problems with Scimweb ...

I just click the 'Add files' button below the text box, select my photo then click 'place inline' and bingo. A quick Preview checks that all is ok and the photos are in the order you want them, and Submit. It takes seconds in my experience.

I must admit I never usually use PNG but to do a test I saved one of my photos from the Brooklands NYD event as a PNG file. I've now uploaded it (via the usual drag & drop) and used the "place inline" option to embed it below:

Brooklands NYD 2019 -4687 B.png
Brooklands NYD 2019 -4687 B.png (2 MiB) Viewed 1713 times

I've placed it with text before and after to check that it embeds where required ok

One thing that I did notice was that the PNG file was much bigger than the JPEG it was derived from: 7.5mb compared to 1.9mb. This meant that the "place inline" button took a little longer to appear - still only seconds, but a noticeable lag. It does seem to have worked though.

I guess the next logical question is what O/S and browser are you using, and how fast is your broadband?

Technically no problem, I have 200 MB broadband, win 10, intel 980 hex core cpu, nvidia 950 gtx SSD disks, so more (much more!) than sufficient for websites, can just do virtual reality (graphics card is weak link).
Maybe I'll try some tests in next few days to get to bottom of the problem.

test of png upload again...
So I tried it again with same results, JPG allows online, PNG does not give me that option and PNG does not display (for me!)
Now looking at file sizes, png is maybe too big? Reducing it in size all works fine.
So what is file size limit? that 651 kb png was only 1024 wide.
If file size is the problem, maybe good to give a message or at least say "All files must be less than X kB?
Or am I missing something ?

Don’t think it’s size related?

Both images uploaded within a second but I’m on my home Wi-fi.

If an image is too big, it gets auto-shrunk by the forum. 5.2MB down to 780kB in the case of the photo I used.

Doesn’t answer your question though Trevor..

Well I had really expected quite some (jovial/sarcastic) remarks about "Missing" brains etc but that's positive!
I'll have to test it yet again but not tonight.

Others of us have experienced the same issues and it does seem to be some sort of buffer size issue when uploading a number of large images.

Hmmm, I was out yesterday evening, so couldn't do any more testing, but it's certainly intriguing :) AJL's suggestion "buffer size issue when uploading a number of large images." sounded interesting, and something to try out. So I've created a batch of 10, 2mb PNG files from some of my Brooklands NYD photographs, and decided to upload them in one hit, which would give the opportunity to see how quickly (if at all) the "place inline" button took to appear, and whether the photos did appear correctly when the post was actually submitted.

Well, It took 25 secs for all 10 images to have a "place inline" button (probably in line with my experience reported in my earlier post were I said it was a bit longer than uploading a jpeg (admittedly, usually smaller). Now the next test - do they place inline and appear successfully?

Well, that appears to have worked ok, so I must admit I'm a little at a loss to know what to suggest?

I haven't had the issue lately. The spray booth shots that I expected problems with all loaded OK.
