6A Kick down cable

Post by John042 » Fri Jul 31, 2020 10:11 am

Hi, just nearly finished a re-commissioning of a 1977 Scimitar 6A Auto. A bit of confusion over the kick down cable. Was disconnected by the previous owner. I seem to remember past posts on the subject, wrong cables etc? Anyway I've included a couple of pics of my layout. Basically if I adjust the cable to reach the carb' linkage, at idle there is a loop of inner cable not returning. Which on opening and closing the throttle will cause the linkage failing to return to idle. I've had the gearbox sump off for oil/filter and servo seals replacement and the mechanism seem to be working correctly. I don't think a shorter cable would work as the movement required within the gearbox is only about 3/4" to operate the valve and then would restrict full throttle at the carb' end. Any thoughts please? Cheers J C.

6A Kick down cable

There is MEANT to be a loop at idle. You just adjust the cable until it just goes tight near WOT and that's it. If the throttle isn't returning, I can't see how it is down to the kickdown cable as it will be really slack at that point.

Thanks AJL as I thought. However the kickdown cable on the return to idle did somehow formed a loop keeping the throttle open. Maybe a stronger return spring is required?

I can see you using a bolt to connect the cable.
Originally it was a clevis pin and split pin to prevent clamping of the cable end to the lever.
It HAS to be loose, your not clamping the cable too tight are you?.

I think Mark has it, as the cable will try to kink if the bolt is tight..just add another nut and tighten the two together whilst bolt is loose in fitting.
