Good morning all, Just a quick introduction and hello.

I am looking into purchasing a 1977 RELIANT SCIMITAR GTE 2994cc PETROL AUTOMATIC 3 Speed 2 DOOR "Barn find" and have arrived here for research and potentially multiple questions before purchase so hopefully in the right place.

Whilst researching the vehicle I have noticed what appears to be vents, bulges, scoops if anyone can shed some light.

If for example these have been fitted as an aftermarket part are there other bits to the vehicle which may suggest foul play and not the innocent barn find?

Appreciate any help on this?

Thanks

Welcome veganight :D There are no bulges as standard, so any you see must be aftermarket. The only air intake holes are beneath the bumper.

Check the chassis carefully for penetrating rust - it can be a large job to fix, or just a day-job, depending on the extent of the corrosion !

Best of luck 8)

I knew I was in the right place :D
So the consensus is then that this is a worthy project?

As above, the concern is with the vents and presuming this has already been 'tampered' with and been given up as a lost project, hence the uncertainty on any other potentially nasty surprises.

Thanks

James

Looks nice at first glance - if the engine is ok then it is a good project - seeing it in the flesh is the ultimate proof though - the missing panels at the back quarters are air outlets - no doubt a plea on this site will turn some up. Can you go to look at it before you buy it - even better if there is someone on this site who can go with you who knows what to look out for

Blue car looks OK to me - well worth restoring; obviously needs new seats, but dashboard is good!

Never seen one with a rusty gear lever - I’d suspect it’s been in a rather damp “barn”...

Is it just me, or is the suspension riding high at the front?

The suspension is a bit high, wonder if the suspension is seized somewhere ?

Looks like “been sat on axle stands for a long time and trunnions seized” high..

veganight, the only redeeming feature looks to be the external bodywork to me - and given the colour any issues might be masked until you’re up close. It could be perfect bodywork wise but you can’t really tell. Unless this one ticks a lot of boxes as it is, I’d wait for (and spend a bit more) on another one if you’re looking for “a” Scimitar. Such as the green SE5a up for sale for similar money..
