Hi fellow enthusiasts.

I am kees and live in the netherlands, and thinking about to buy a scimilar ss1 from august 1985.

I am not shure yet to do this, reason is chassis rot if not galvanized, I can weld, ahve the equipment but
still it can be a uge undertaking, is it worth that.

The car had a mot in 2013 sinds then not drived anymore and is outside parked for 7 years, fortunely, it has a
body who d not rust and act as protection against rain, driving it is more damaging, thanks to this body, a normal
can will; rust when stay parked outside, the car is on concrete floor so not above grass, that will be damaging.

Ha ssomeone here some advice, what to look for and some tips, the car is so far away I can not go look at it, no train
because of corona, the owner says it is oke, but I think it is not galvanized because it is 1985, but maybe I get lucky
and it is just on border and as such is galvanized, can I see on the papers and chassis number if it is galvanized?.

As I did hear, the window stile and door style can so rot that it get,s loose, so this is easy to see, ande maybe to
repair if it is loosed on the sill itselfs.

But you huys I think have enough experince to help me out, to do it or not, is the chassis oke, I can use protection like RX5
and RX10 it is wonderfull protection, very good.

I wish you a good day and weekend, and stay save.

pics, one is not a ss1 but thought I do still place it here, a G26.

regards kees

Welcome :D

A 1985 car won’t have left the factory with a galvanised chassis bu it may have one retro-fitted at some point in its life.

Which engine does it have - the 1600 with the five speed box is not bad but the 1400 with 4 speed box is not so good - you can of course fit a five speed box - done it myself,. Top one to buy of course is the 1800 turbo all of which have galvanised chassis - great fun to drive.

Hi Kees, should the chassis not be reparable, there is a galvanized, and then recently re-galvanized, chassis available in the Netherlands, along with good support and spares.

The car has a 1600 motor,, who is compleet overhauld, and a 5 gear.

I am a little worried about the chassis, repair that is a lot of work if it is rotten and most of the time unrepairable.

I go ask the owner to make pic,s before I buy, maybe you guys with experience can tell me where to make pics to see what is happened, for as I now now
the doors syles do rot, even beadly and the doors get loose or do not close well, if these close well, things are more promissing.

I can weld, see pic of the mercedes, this was real rot.

What do you mean? is the car I did mention about? have the present owner buy this car in 2011 and is the chassis protected with wax? who
means I can buy it more savely? I have to ask the owner about the numbers you did ask.

I have not so much mony to buy a good and more expensive one, and it will also give me not what I want, some things to do with this corona lockdown and it is fun, I have all equipment even a lathe.

Oke I have the number, and if this zar is the one mentioned, I can savely buy it? or it is for shure repairable, protection wax do help a lot, RX5 and RX10 even better. steel chassis does not always mean rotten, also the user has impact on that by take care for sich car itselfs.

number is through PM.

Thanks.

regards

Kees, a very warm welcome. I have just looked through the register and I have lots of images of your car bearing both its former UK registration and its later one. As has been said, they are great little cars. Fun to drive, easy to maintain with great backing through both the Reliant Sabre and Scimitar Owners Club and our spares specialists. Please let us know how you hope to proceed.

I think it sounds like the car has had some preventative work carried out but without an inspection I wouldn’t like to say I’d it’s good or not.

If someone has gone to the trouble of applying a wax preservative to the chassis, then one would hope it was (and still is) in good condition.

Thanks, is there also a good way to check the chassis? like the doors not closing well, window sills not rigit etc, is the sill below the car visible? there it does rot, wax treatment does help a lot protecting it.

I need info about that before buying from the owner, a brother has buy that car in 2017, but never time to go make it road ready, as most has in this oldtimer business.

I live 200+ km from him and travel is diffivult with the corona, I try to figure out the condition of the chassis, if you guys let me now where he was to look, I can tell him.

These can rot? but this is I think a car who is never take attention to, I see it is welded earlyer also.

So I need to look good, or the seller needs to look at it good, I go ask for him to look good, also, the sills below the doors and doorstyles itself
are the most problematic.

Bad steel, bad protected the early cars.
