Hello from Germany

Post by dermicha » Wed Apr 08, 2020 11:38 pm

Hi,
I'm Mike from Germany. Nice to meet you.
My English is not the best, but I will try my best.

I'm intersted in buying a Scimitar S6a. I like the Scimitar form for a long time. In general small coupes (I have middle 80s Sciroccos).
But I never had a chance to take a ride with one. They are pretty rare in Germany.
Now I have one which is interesting. I try to inspect it at the weekend.

Maybe you can help me.
Unfortunately, the car is quite far away. Therefore I have another question that I would like to clarify beforehand. Maybe you can help me there, otherwise I don't even have to look at the car.Can I fit in the car? I am 190cm tall.

Kind regards

Hi Mike and welcome! :D

I’m 185cm tall and fit in an SE6a quite easily, but not every person is the same shape 8) or like the seat at the same angle.
The only way to know is to sit in, and drive one.

Hi Mike,

If you want to 'try one on' you are welcome to have a testdrive in one of mine (east Netherlands). Of course after the current corona issues.

PS Ich spreche auch Deutsch.

Gruss,
Erik

Thanks for the warm welcome

I will check the car on Saturday.

The owner told me that he wants to sell it, because the steering is too unprecise and the general stability is weak. He said that he changed all bushings, springs and shocks of the front axle, but still he is dissapointed. It is not stable on higher speeds (he owns a BMW of the same era to compare)

Are there some known weak spots at the front axle/steering? Like typical scimitar problem areas, besides the usual suspects?

Regards Mike

It may have PAS which some people (like me) find too light and lacking in feedback.

It could equally have the wrong trunnions fitted, or the wishbones assembled wrongly.

That is a strange story.

On roadbehaviour a Scimitar is at least equal to a BMW. When not, some checking and replacing is on the list. PAS does feel a bit indirect, but not as bad as other classics with PAS, or some modern ones :w
Personally I am always a but suspect when a German talks about " on higher speeds". The rest of us think of 100 km/h to 130 km/h. Germans often think >160 km/h

I regularly sat at 160km/h in my GTC when I lived in Germany.

Jim, I'm glad someone agrees with me about power steering on a Scimitar .
Dark Star Coupé is perfectly stable at 240 kph, done it twice but I'm not saying where
Front end is standard, though the car is lowered quite a lot ...

Well PAS is a discussion base in any forum of car which had it as option, I think.

Same thing at VW Scirocco. I have both, but I prefere PAS. I need a smaller steeringwheel to fit in the car, and I'm not 18 anymore.

Oh... I didn't thought about that. Next time I will be more precise with the speed. He said around 110 to 130 it starts to be not so nice. So I think there is maybe something wrong. I do not want to have a sports car which drives blurry. I will check that later.

And to be German: I hate it, if I have a speedlimit. Mostly my car gives me my limit. But I'm not so hard with classics, they are old. Mostly 100 to 130 is max. Only the Scirocco, it just feels not right to drive it too slow. And even the stock config allows over 200.

Mike

Last time we were in Germany we liked to cruise at 180 ( in the Middlebridge ) but the roadworks on the Autobahns kept us from going any higher. Normally we found the roads over there reactively clear but not last time ( French international ) things were a lot different.

note that the 3 cars above (modified GTC, modified coupe & Middlebridge) all have the 2.9i engine fitted, I wouldn’t cruise at those speeds with a standard 3.0 Essex in a 6a.

Soooo...
I'm back from my inspection of the offer.

Unfortunatly I didn't bought it. Price / condition does not match. Beside the windshield sealing, all sealing rubbers are rock hard or broken, up to non exsisting. It is badly repainted and it is loosing the paint too. Additional there are a lot cracks like spiderwebs on the lh fender. Lot of interiour parts were broken. Chrome trim in bad condition.
And there was still the misterious problem with the driving stability.
It was offerd with a refurbished frame (sandblasted, new bushing, paint etc, by preowner). But it had already a rusty surface, again. So I think it was superficial just to fraud the owner, which is a very nice guy. He told me what he spend for getting the car street legal, I really feel sorry for him.
Engine sounds well, but that is one of the cheapest parts

The last call was 4000. For me, it was a 2500 max. So no car for me.

But in general... I think I want to have one. Preverred a se6 or se6a in DE or NL.

Mike
