Overdrive for SE5a 1975

Post by Rev Light » Sat Jun 15, 2019 5:55 pm

Looking for an overdrive for a 5a. I have a 3 rod box and a prop shaft with flange mounts.

Cheers

Steve

Probably easier and just as cheap to look for a a complete GB with OD

I think Steve does mean the complete box - we have a 6a box here that could yield an overdrive but would need a prop (or can you swap/modify the output shaft?)

Yes a prop shaft forJim's gearbox would also be an option. I was just assuming that it would be easier to change the overdrive in situ, without pulling the engine and gearbox....

The prop shaft from a 2-rod gearbox would fit Jim’s gearbox if fitted to yours. I can say this because my first 5a had a 2-rod non-overdrive box, then a 6a overdrive box, then a 2-rod overdrive box and I used the same prop for all.

Having seen the lumps of metal you removed from the gearbox, I wouldn’t swap the overdrive in situ without investigating further.

I am still driving the car. However I take your point. There was probably plenty of stuff floating around in the oil by the colour of it. But the lumps were restricted to the overdrive, stuck to the magnet. And it's only the overdrive that has failed. Just not thrilled at the probability of pulling the engine again

Cheers

I have most combinations you may need Steve.

Factory reconditioned OD, a good used OD.
A good used gearbox too.

I MAY have a full GB + OD, but would have to look.

So, after having taken advice that the probability of being able to just pull the overdrive, leaving engine and gearbox in position, being highly unlikely, due to lack of access to the top bolts. I am either looking for 5A gearbox with overdrive or a 6A gearbox with overdrive and a propshaft and possibly a gearstick and linkages.......Job for the winter.

Cheers

Steve

It would be nice if you can fit a two rail box - although earlier better IMO - the gearbox can be removed from the bell housing as the bolts are on the outside

Hi Steve
I can confirm it would be nearly impossible to remove OD in situ.

I have checked my stock and I have a working OD with flange.
A Factory ReCon OD with flange, and a sliding joint for the later cars.
A 5a Box that was on exchange so I don`t know the condition but the input shaft is Not showing play.
