Hypoid SAE 80 gear oil - GL4 spec
should take about 2.8 litres or 5 pints

As Phil alluded to above, MG specified a 20/50 engine oil in their overdrive, so someone used to working on MGs May have just filled it without checking.

EP90 (edit EP80 - 90 is for the diff) would have been specified originally but a modern multi grade 80W90 is much better for it.

EP90 is for axle. EP80 for gearbox and gearbox with overdrive.

one in the sump and a pressure filter under a screw cap - both metal so you can clean them, rarely any need to replace.
