Smoking Dick

Post by speedy555 » Sat Aug 01, 2020 10:20 am

I'm in the process of getting my latest 5a "Diesel Dick" roadworthy. It has a return pipe for Diesel to the tank which I either need to modify or replace.
Does it need to return to tank or can it just tee back into the fuel line in the engine bay before the filter?
Thanks.

I think diesels of that vintage need a clear run back to tank as it’s main run for the leak off pipes? They’re bad enough to bleed at the best of times so you don’t want to introduce (possibly) aerated fuel into the feed line.

Ok thanks, I'll just renew the return pipe, but out of 2 or 3 pieces rather than the 6 or 7 currently, and of various materials 🤔

Next question is, what is this cylindrical bit on the pump? It is connected to the fan sender switch, but is disconnected ATM with no apparent issue.
Fan isnt wired up yet but wondering if I need to wire this up for some reason.

Probably not thinking about it; could it be a cold start "idle up"? Maybe (and yes you could get a Sierra TD with AC) it would add a few rpm when the AC was switched on?

Not sure what engine your using but the solenoid could either be a shut off valve or an excess fuel device for cold starting., as for the return pipe it does need to go back to the tank to prevent any aeration of the fuel and also ensure you use the correct size of return pipe. Had a ERF tractor unit brought in to us which had an engine swap from a Rolls Royce engine to a 14 ltr Cummins engine but just had a major lack of power, traced the problem to the fuel return pipe as they had used the Rolls Royce pipework wich was 1/2 the size of the Cummins fuel system.

Doesnt seem to be a relay, or at least I can't get a click from it if I wire it up. I seem to have 2x fan switches, a 2 pin on the stat housing and a 4 pin in the top hose, and these seem to have been all linked together with the mystery wiring on the pump.
Seems to start and run fine all unplugged though, and was just intending to use the 2 pin fan switch.

Possibly as seems sierra fittment only. I have a manual on the engine, but doesnt cover the particularities of the sierra, and there's no mention of it in the book, so guessing sierra only spec.

Next job is to find an alternative to the wonderfully engineered alternator bracket

take a look at a scimitar handbrake adjuster, (you may have one?) it will fit there nicely.

I was hoping to turn the alternator over and put the adjuster downwards to the block somewhere.
