annoyingly, they’ve just made a plate that bolts the gearbox to the engine with absolutely no research.

I’ve done no further research, is there a Mazda thingy whatsit that can provide a longer input shaft?

what are you meaning the input shaft on the RX8 box won't enter in the essex spigot bearing?

i know some machine down the face of the bellhousing

With no clutch fitted, the input shaft will engage in the spigot bearing but the bellhousing isn’t deep enough to accept the standard clutch/flywheel. The pic above shows the RX8 release bearing and Scimitar/Ford clutch fitted, you can see that it’s too deep. There may be a solution with a mix of flywheels/clutches/release bearings but that’s not on my list of things to do at the moment as this car is a budget build with bits I have on the shelf, not buying more bits if I can help it :D

Incidentally, I measured the throw and there’s about 20-25mm max movement on the RX8 release bearing.

some have to grind the webs of the inside of the bell housing, would that be an option?

Nope, That would only give a few mm - much more room needed as you can see from my last pic.

Options that I can see are, longer input shaft and a spacer on the bellhousing, longer input shaft and different bellhousing, a different combination of release bearing/clutch/flywheel. i suppose an input shaft extension could be an option like we used to do on the type 9?

Corky’s bench test project had a spigot extension iirc (on a 2.8 ), doesn’t get over the drive plate not having much spline to drive.

I thought the 5 and 6 speed boxes were a straight swap with each other? They don’t look the same length to me?

Doesn’t look to be much additional room inside the bellhousing though? Possibly more ribs that could be attacked?

well not sure if anyone's going to get one of these boxes onto an essex but if you do you might be interested in my rear mount
just tacked up for now - i was going to tie into the higher up mount but i don't think it needs it seems strong enough like this

Picked up a 6 speed box this week - basically free with a zetec adaptor plate because it was stuck in gear.

After much playing around, I risked taking the rear housing off and found the linkage was jammed. Freed it up and it now seems to be working properly.

Lots of measuring and trial fit came to the same conclusion as before - it won’t fit with the standard flywheel and clutch.

Didn’t take many pictures other than detent springs etc when I was discussing it with Phil via WhatsApp

on one of the facebook groups there is a guy who has one fitted into an se5a i can't remember his name but it's a white car with 15" rota grids fitted don't know if its a 5 or 6 speed but from what i gather he's still got the essex v6 in
might be worth seeing if he'll come on here and share details of how he's done it :)
