RX8 gearbox into 5a

Post by scimjim » Sun May 03, 2020 2:20 pm

Here’s the gearbox mounts (5 speed RX8 v 2 rod overdrive) the RX8 box is physically only 75mm longer (then a 5mm adaptor plate to add in) but the gearstick is only 45mm further back (again, 5mm to add to that measurement). The forward of those two M12 studs on the RX8 box is about 65mm further rear than the mount on the overdrive, but along with the other one, looks quite simple to hang a bracket off - BUT it looks to be at the same height (when fitted) as the crossmember, so no room for a rubber mount. I think mr angry grinder might have to remove the chunk of alloy those studs are fitted to.

Edit - output shaft to base of the rubber mount on the 2 rod is approx 140mm (the rubber mount only adds 20mm to the dimension), almost exactly the same as the RX8 box output shaft to the exposed base of the M12 stud.

RX8 gearbox into 5a

During a brief mock up, I couldn’t get the Essex clutch assembly to clear the inside of the bellhousing.

Was only a quick look

That’s interesting!

Better try it for size before I go any further :D

Ideally I wanted to machine the thickness of the adapter plate off the bellhousing so the input shaft engages properly.

Using the RX8 release bearing the clutch was disengaged as you did up the bellhousing bolts (before milling) and the clutch cover hit the bellhousing.

Think I would have needed to look at custom clutch/other Ford applications.

Other then that it all seemed very sensible to do, the gear-lever position is about the same as a type 9 conversion.

It looks like the release bearing surface (front seal holder) is too long? Input shaft total length is 1/2” shorter than the 2 rod box but the exposed splines dimension is smaller by 3/4”

So it’s on with no release bearing - I think it’s hitting the bellhousing (but there’s a lot of alloy ribs that can be trimmed) but I’ll have to have a better look next weekend.

Jim that will sit too high if you want to keep the standard cross member, i'll get a picture of mine
but i've removed those 2 studs and got it sat on the original cross member with a piece of ply packing it to the right height

this is sat in the correct position - the 2 studs you have the ally bolted to are removed and the plywood is resting on the mounting face they were screwed into and the top of to scimitar cross member

ideally i should have measured thickness of the plywood but its 3/4" or 1"

Yep, that piece of alloy was marking the ideal height.

In the end I went back to KISS principles and drilled a hole in it to take an SE5 engine mount but didn’t take a pic :D
