I think that brown should be going to earth - normally connected to the nearest rocker box cover bolt. I can look this weekend if no-one reports back sooner.

Might as well, you’re not going to need it 😀

There are two different wiring sets dependent on distributor. The brown wire on the Lucas 3 pin plug would normally earth to the body of the distributor - never seen one to the rocker cover bolt, that's certainly not the original arrangement.

For the Bosch (3 lug, long body, blue cap) it's only a 2 wire plug and a separate adaptor harness is used which plugs in to the usual coil connectors and then replaces them. Can't recall the actual wiring, but it sounds to me like someone has effectively tried to do that by means of splicing.

I wasn’t suggesting it was original :D

But it would be black originally :D

Thanks all I was thinking it was an earth
The other black lead soldered to the white coil wire must be for the electric choke
Progress today
I've insulated the bare wires and discovered that the temperature controlled vacuum valve? On the inlet manifold is broken :!:

I wouldn’t be worried about that - ignore it and just go from dizzy straight to carb.

I did wonder why there is a heated inlet manifold, I thought you were supposed to have cold air and fuel going into the cylinders :!: I have lived is Scotland though when the average maximum daily Temperature in February was -1c so I know it's a little different up there :D
Anyway another stupid question
Where does this bracket attach :?: And what goes in the other clamp clutch or speedo cable :?:

It's currently attached to main battery cable but I can't see where the other end (by the water hose ) goes

The manifold isn’t heated?

I've found why the hazard switch was not working properly

So if your hazards only work with the switch pushed fully in and the ignition lights come on you know what it is :!:
I've managed to straighten the contacts and all OK now

In other news I've got sparks :D The engine turns over on the starter - with the plugs removed
All :!: I have to do now is refit the rebuilt carb, finish the fuel lines and fill the cooling system before trying to start the engine for the first time. It's never been started since it was built up over 10 years ago :!:

Well I've briefly got the engine running :D I filled the float chamber after turning it over without the plugs in untill the oil warning light extinguished and after a few reluctant turns it fired :!: A bit lumpy but just about cleared when it ran out of fuel

Bad news there's a leak from the water pump casting you can see the drip on the sump about 1 drip per second

Has anybody any thoughts on "K seal" or failing that I presume it's cross member out crank pulley off cam belt off to get at it. :?: I fairly sure it's "new" that is unused but 10 years old. I suspect it's just a gasket.
