I suppose it depends what you have on the car at the moment and whether the captive nuts are the same thread as the originals? For the price though, I wouldn’t expect to use old bolts.

Cheers, Jim. I think I'll have to just get the extra brackets and get stuck in!

So I need to get hold of another 4 bolts as well as the 2 extra brackets?
If it came as a kit from GW then just point out what`s missing Tom. :?:
Agreed Jim there are the small bolts missing and plain + Spring washers to fasten the outer brackets to the car.
I always replicate what Reliant used on the parts I produce, which is always UNF threads and fasteners, in the unlikely event a New fastener goes missing the old original part can be reused, I like to keep things original so there should not be any issues over compatibility.
I made a batch of those and still have a few left in Zinc rich primer.
Ignore the rusty Over Rider bracket

Also missing are the spring washers to keep ALL the fasteners in place, very bad practice to not have some form of retaining mechanism on a fastener, especially one subject to vibration like on a car.

All bumper parts are now present and correct, and the Spax coilovers are ready and waiting. The most pressing matter, however, is to sort the offside lower trunnion mounting bolt, which has started to knock again, after a temporary fix a year ago. So, the trunnion kit has arrived from QRG and I will tackle the job tomorrow. Any tips from anyone who's done this recently?

(There are four O-rings in both kits, by the way - one of them turned out to be hiding among the other parts!)

Plenty of grease Tom
It helps hold the O rings and washers in place :W

Some progress has been made over the last few weeks:

The custom exhaust is now fitted and sounds good. The mid-silencer has been removed. The tailpipes are a little shorter than the originals - but hopefully what I lack in length I compensate for in girth... The tune-up revealed she was running too lean. Now that that's been sorted, she fires up much more eagerly and idles smoothly.

The trunnion kits have been fitted, along with two new grease nipples on each side to help avoid future seizures.

The Spax adjustable coilovers have been fitted all round, and the ride is now noticeably improved.

Finally, most of the bits have arrived from QRG for a cooling system overhaul. I'm just waiting on a couple of hoses which are on 'back order' at the moment.

I think that'll be all, mechanically-speaking. Next, onto the cosmetics...

Just looking at your new shocks and I noticed that the picture shows a black adjuster knob , my car came with a set of Spax on it [ they look about 3 years old ] no knob only a screw head , as in the middle of the black knob . Does each of your spax have the knob or do you just have one and you use it on which ever shock you are working on . I ask as I have found it impossible to rotate the screws on mine . Regards Richard .

Yes, Richard, there is a black adjuster knob on each of mine. For the rear springs (as pictured above), it faces the back of the car, and for the front springs it's on the side (parallel with the wheel). Perhaps there's been a bit of a redesign in recent years.

On my AVOs the threads for the adjustable spring seat seem to tarnish/rust quickly; yours look sparklingly clean - any suggestions on how to keep them looking good?

Looks a bit crusty underneath. What’s the rear end around the petrol tank like ?

i spray my dampers and springs with chain grease and replace it every spring when I do the annual greasing.

i did similar jobs on 8 ball a few years ago (silicone hoses, alloy rad, new suspension - I refurbished my front seats and replaced the carpets too) and although it’s a big outlay, it’s probably the only one in ten years - everything else has just been annual maintenance.

I should hopefully discover the answer to that question soon, once I find a garage to stick it up in the air. It's definitely on my checklist!

That's reassuring to know, Jim. Yes, I'm hoping that'll be the case for me. It's worth getting these things all sorted before the respray but, having spent well over the car's value within just the past 12 months, I'm hoping my expenditure will be significantly reduced in the coming years!
