Rescued SS1.. The Golden Goose!!

Post by turbster » Sun May 05, 2019 8:37 am

I wanted to get re acquainted with the small sports, and while deciding which version to go for and looking out for a suitable car a post on Facebook offered a very sad looking Ti for sale before it was broken. It looked like it was dragged out of a garden and a quick check suggested it had sat there since the mid 2000’s.

After having a quick look while having a coffee, most of the metal in the tub had suffered badly and rest resembles a plant pot!

So after rolling it into the workshop I had a good look and removed the hood.. in about 6 pieces and threw it away!

Apologies if anyone’s eating their breakfast while reading this 😂 It’s just as bad as it looks, with added moisture!

Oh and luckily there is an engine which looks quite original and complete 👍

I don’t really have one yet, I’m stripping it to a rolling chassis with the tub attached and I’ll probably rebuild a corner at a time keeping it mobile.. Thoughts so far are, fabricate some tubular wishbones which accommodate inboard springs and some different uprights.. same at the rear including disc conversion. First job is to repair the armatures if they’re good enough, or get some better ones if it works out better. Engine could remain, but Omega V6 or maybe SAAB, small capacity Ecoboost are a possibility... Body mods which will be very Batmobile because I thought that looked great! Some version of pop up lights in the Active nose would be nice too.. Maybe I do have a plan after all. Few projects to sort before I can get on to this one in anger, but I’ll keep it moving along.

I spent an hour or two on it yesterday morning and came up with a few names for it.. however not wanting to get banned on here I’ll stick to the one Darryl gave it 😂

All that sounds great, the Saab lump is a tad heavy I think. Im aiming for something similar with the styling, as you say it looked great didn't it, I have been toying with the idea of making some carbon panels

Yeah the Saab bit only came from having the gearbox for one really. I have the Omega, so that will be the first one to be trialed in the chassis..

I’m guessing I may see you soon again, with a list of bits needed :D

What is that “bellows” looking thing by the heater motor? Edit - is that a cruise control fit???

I ave it on good authority that Reliant were trying to fit a Vauxhall v6 into a SS1 so perhaps it is possible

I’m already compiling a list Jim 👍

Phil H said the same about the cruise control, and yes that’s what it is!

Eh op, Paul. Fergit the pop up lights, pay homage to Concord an' put a headlight revealing droop-nose on it, it'll do wonders fer the aero-dynamics!

I used to know the Reliant Engineer at the time - who came from Vauxhall..

It's quite noticable the extra weight of the Nissan over then CVH on the handling, and again the DET over ET, so I'd be mindful of adding too much weight in the engine bay. No idea on the V6 Vauxhall weights though
