Well 2 out of 4 tyres arrived today.

No need to get the table spoons out for tyre levers just yet...

Once they're fitted, I give a brief report back on them, but I thought I'd show the tread pattern this time.

Hi Ben,
Are those tyres marked M&S anywhere on the sidewalls?
Slightly odd question, but some of the events I do ban M&S tyres and I know these work well having had some about 15 years ago
Thanks
Gavin

I've just had a look and I can't see any M&S markings anywhere.

I take it M&S is something like Mud & Snow, rather than suitable for going to Marks & Spencers.

Hi Ben, had those on my 5a, came already fitted to the mgzr harpins I used and sprinted on. They were great all rounders

The plastic rings, that retain the glass, on my wing mirrors were falling apart, so the glass was going to fall out. I’d temporarily (about 6 months ago) taped in the glass on the nearside.

I’d identified them as a Ford mirror, but I couldn’t find anywhere to get spares or replacements. After looking through lots of options, I settled on some Tex mirrors, as they look period correct all the spare parts are available. The ones I chose also have a mounting foot slightly bigger than the mirrors I’m replacing, so would cover any existing holes

I can’t recommend these mirrors though, they just don’t have enough range of adjustment. I’d got handed stems, it worked on the LH, but on the RH I couldn’t adjust the mirror to make it usable. So I got alternative straight stems.

This works on the RH, but not the LH, so I have an annoying asymmetric situation.

The mirrors are supposed to mount using the plastic gasket as an expanding plug when screws go through them. However, these don’t work with the thickness of the GRP, so I used through bolts instead to get a robust fitting.

While the door trims were off, I pulled the winder mechs. off to grease up, as they were looking very dry. I lubed the glass channels with silicone spray & felt I couldn’t put the rusty steel plates back, on, so these got a coat of paint too & a couple of sound deadening pads in the doors too.

In a vain attempt to keep water out the car, I’ve made new polythene membranes, fitted with double-sided foam tape

I noticed, the 1/4 light rubbers need replacing, so I'll have to splash out on the ones that the club have had re-manufactured

Looking good Ben, I did the polythene membrane on my 5a, it worked well. I also bought tex bullet mirrors and that didn’t work well

I'm not a fan of the bullet mirrors from a functionality point of view, which is why I went for a rectangular mirror. It's just the range of adjustment is quite poor.

Having spotted one of the steering rack gaiters was perished, I'd bought a new pair to fit. When I couldn't get the drivers side on in place I pulled the rack out. So replacing the gaiters turned in to decrease, clean-up, prep & paint.

Now I know it could do with new mounting bushes & track rod ends too...

I'd bought some new fuel pipe (cohline ethanol resistant) for under the bonnet, but on inspection at the back I found this

It was some un-used pipe I had in the garage & fitted about 18 months ago. So that's a good advert for the cohline stuff. I have a few more bits to replace, but I hadn't bought enough.

I had the car on my lift, so I could give it a good check over & make a list of new bits to get. I took the grill & head inner headlights out, do I could make a start on sorting the wiring out. It's a bit messy on the LH inner wing where extra relays had been added in the past, but the wiring in front of the radiator is also a bit of a rats nest

There are big gaps around the radiator too, that need filling in, to force the air through the rad, rather than round it.

I've arranged to get the new tyres fitted next week. So I took all the wheels off & thought they needed a good clean & polish prior to new wheel weights going on. However, soapy water just wasn't going to cut it on the inside of the wheels which were greasy & dirty, so I went in with Jizer first.

That was all hosed off, then soapy water & a brush, followed by 240 grit wet & dry and a file in places on the inside.

On the outside, there were some little bits that got hit with 600 grit wet & dry, but mostly Autosol.

After all that, there's a bit of paint flaking around the valves on a couple of the wheels. The guy who's swapping the tyres doe wheel refurbishment, so I think I'll see if he can repaint the spokes & paint the inside black, so it's easier to clean in the future.

I’m glad your sticking with those wheels, they’ve been such an integral part of that car’s look for so long.

I dug out some old copies of Slice whilst I was in my loft looking for something else. I thought I'd have a flick through to see if I could find old photos of my car. Here's what I found:

Slice 59 (May - June 1981) p.6
Slice 59 p6.jpg
Slice 59 p6.jpg (279.63 KiB) Viewed 138 times
It has wing mounted mirrors (rather than door mounted) & this will also be the original bronze colour as the reciept for the respray in Reliant Silver Streak, by Terry Cox is dated 18/08/81. It also does not have the sunroof, which was fitted on 02/07/81. I can't tell what wheels are on it, the revolution wheels came at a later date.

Next up Slice 69 (Jan - Feb 1983) p14 & 15

A report of it on the club stand at the Classic Car Show in Brighton.

Now in Silver Streak paint colour, but still before the Revolution wheels, but I'm not sure what these ones are? Also it doesn't have the perspex headlight covers.

This time at the Sabre Day, with Dr Graham Shepherd winning the Autotest Coupe class.

I then don't have an Slice editions from 74 to 134 so I would miss most of Dr Shepherd's further mentions.

I've not looked at the later editions for Trevor Shortt's ownership yet.
