The Doctors Coupe - SRE 353G

Post by BigBobPilot » Fri Apr 03, 2020 6:58 pm

I’ve hit that problem that many people are having now. I need some new tyres; the grip on mine isn’t great in the wet, they date from Feb 2011 and have some surface cracking. It was something that I didn't sort out last year, but I want it done this year.

However, the range of tyres available for 14” wheels is now very poor. Ironically, the coupe was originally on 15” rims, but I guess it was swapped to 14’s to allow for a better range of tyres for hill climbing etc at the time. The 14x7 Revoulution 5-spokes were purchased in 1985, so it’s had them a long time & I like the look with the 205/60 x 14 tyres (see below). I don’t really want narrower tyres, as they won’t fill the modified rear wheel arches as well & will also be smaller diameter. The next size available is a 185/60 x 14, which is 24mm smaller on the diameter, so would lower the car by 12 mm (1/2”) and increase the tyre to body radial gap.

Adams & Page (who deal with a lot of tyres for the Classic Sports Car Club) only have a budget tyre:

https://www.highwycombetyres.co.uk/Tyre ... edium=size

Black Circles & Camskill have a better looking Nankang:

https://www.camskill.co.uk/m4b0s402p131 ... e%3A_71dB

My view with a car that doesn’t get used a huge amount, is to get a soft sporty tyre, as it is more likely to be replaced due to age, rather than wearing it out. However, if you do get a softer tyre, then it’s a bit of fun using it & trying to wear it down before if gets old & cracked. That ethos is slightly screwed, when the tyres aren’t available. The alternative is moving to 15” wheels and having a larger range of tyres, at quite a lot more cost. Plus I still can’t quite match the current tyre width & diameter, so I’d need to make some other adjustments.

So it may well be Hobsons Choice of picking the best out of the available 2 or 3 tyres I can find, but I’ll make a few phone calls first to make sure there’s nothing more that isn’t on websites.

On a serious note looks like Toyo Proxes CF2 or the Nankang Ultra Sports.

Not sure if changing to a 195/65R14 opens up more options?

For me that coupes been on those wheels so long it would be nice to keep them, 14x7 revos are very rare.

Well that was worthwhile posting. The 205/55x14 is a bit too much of a diameter reduction (20mm). However, I'd not found the Toyo Proxes CF2. "MrTyres.co.uk" website says they have them & at a reasonable price too. That might just be the kiddie. Ideal time to get stuff delivered when I'm working from home in Covid-19 lock-down.

The 195/65 x 14 is a very close match in size, but i can't find too much more in that size.

Thanks James (& the 2nd from BC)

Rain sport 3 not available in 205/60 x 14 or 195/65 x 14

Uniroyals website suggested they did? May be a case of no retailer holding it.

You thinking RainExpert3? They’re available in the “taller” sizes.

They make a good road tyre. Obviously not really suited to heavily spirited driving, but you wouldn’t be doing so on 195/65’s would you in the first place..

The CF2 is equally capable I’d say. Neither are going to be setting records but you don’t get any surprises either.

Ben,

Glad you are continuing to enjoy the car. I still miss it but it needed more commitment than I could really provide. Interesting re tyres, I was having the same debate and was thinking CF2

Hopefully see it again sometime in the future,
