I would certainly agree about servicing the gearbox. I carry the gasket and the filter in stock. There is an O ring that you ought to change whilst in there. It causes slow first and reverse takeup and is a job that is quite straightforward with the sump off.

I have never had an issue with the bonnet pull being attached to the trim panel. It's strong enough to hold the and dosent cause an issue when moving the panel.

Yes, mine seem to be ok, I suspect it's only an issue if your panel starts delaminating (windscreen leak?????)

Hi Guy,
Did you get to the noggin last night? How did it feel in the GTC?

Yes, made it to the noggin in a Scimitar for the first time in 23 years

It was interesting - first journey in the dark. The exterior lighting was not so bad - yes, it's not up to modern standards but that can be fixed. It was however, pretty dark inside :?
The dash lighting luminosity was about 0.1 candle! The panel light switch was doing nothing, so that needs investigating, along with no interior lights. The wipers have stopped again...
Also experienced an issue with the door lock, which turned out to be a trim screw that was jammed in the door location catch (the additional one on the GTC) Once extracted, the door shut and locked correctly again.

The more I'm driving the GTC, the better it gets. It takes me back with the smells, sounds and rattles which are so sanitized in moderns. Maybe the draughts, frequent "features" and thirst for super-unleaded will take a little more getting used to, but I'm loving it :D

Well, today started okay. Attempts to sort out some of the electrical gremlins having mixed success, but now she won't start :-(. I've not touched anything to do with the ignition, so either something has been dislodged or its something else entirely! Maybe coil or HT leads given up after being laid up for so long. It's not fuel, I can smell that! Maybe like me, she decided it was a bit to chilly to play anymore ;-)

Have you had it switched on and burnt the coil out chasing gremlins today?

Don't think so. Didn't have ignition on for long. All I was trying to get fixed today was the wipers - again! - and the panel lights. Concluded the panel light reostat is kaput, but I couldn't figure how to get the dash front off. It seems to be held by the "blanking plug" on the opposite side to the panel light switch (I assume this is where a manual choke would be?) The plug - if that is what it is - won't budge. I've a replacement centre console carcass, so can see there is a riveted metal plate on either side, with a 'D' hole for the panel light switch on the passenger side, and whatever goes on the drivers side.

As I've been working mostly in this area, this is why I don't think the starting issue is related to anything I have done today.

Pull the rear wash/wipe blanking plug off and remove the nut and bolt under it :-)

The workshop manual for the 6b/C was really just the service bulletin in a binder and concentrated on the Cologne rather than any of the minor detail changes. The parts manual (available on GWs site) is quite handy.

Removed the air filter, checked everything was okay. Removed and checked the HT leads (who thought it would be a good idea to mount the alternator above the plug  ), and checked the coil and ignition connections. Everything in order - turned her over and she started fine
I think she doesn't like the cold (can't blame her, I don't either)
Took her out for a drive and a smile :D

Daft question alert:
This is the cologne engine which is breakerless ignition. The distributor has a vacuum diaphragm unit and pipe to the carb. The vacuum pipe however, has been split about half way along it's length and reconnected using a small length of solid threaded bar. To me this means the vacuum is not being used. Is this correct?

Yes, so you have no vacuum advance.
