551 A race oddity

Sadly I’m cursed with “mechanical sympathy”.

Unless I’m annoyed - then I do things like change down to first to go round Hall at Loton.

Had the desired effect though - didn’t bog down..

If you need first at Hall, you are not going fast enough  ( it does depend on car and gearing)

3.62 diff, 1600 CVH but due to fuelling issues wouldn't pull cleanly below about 4k (at the time) which meant couldn't carry 2nd gear. 1st at 6.5 to 7k coming round the corner sorted that..

I understand. My heavy MR2 has a rather tall 2nd. I tried 1st at Hall and some others, but it was quicker overall to lose some revs in second and avoid the gear changes.

Was only the third time I'd been round the corner ever (1st timed), so don't know it well enough yet..

Racers excuse book volume 1, page 17 in case you were wondering..

Ah, never mind. When the "little" engines have aged they'll have torque as well, just like the grown up classy ones.😎😁

I wasnt suggesting you were going too slow Phil, that was Too Tall Hall

I was almost walking pace my first few events at Loton, think you did a grand job (didnt crash!) At one of the hardest venues to learn

Wiscombe for me. It’s a bit more dark and scary, like those fairy tales in the woods. Both epic venues though.

Is we sideways yet...
