551 A race oddity

Post by BigBobPilot » Wed Feb 24, 2016 12:00 am

A handful of Scimitars have passed through my hands, but all SE5 / 5a’s. None for sometime though. So, much like a Fisher Price toy, I’ve got “my first SS1”. This one may be familiar to folks.

I blame Craig Hughes, I’ve driven half of his, in various states of tune. So Darth Hughes has drawn me into the dark wedgie side. Sorry to offend all SS1 aficionados, but I still think they’re ugly little blighters. Fortunately I’ve bought it for it’s performance potential, not its looks (good job really). I’ll just have to polish it as best as I can… My particular dislike is flop down head lights (I like pop-up, just not flop down on any car). Fortunately again, it already has one of Craigs one piece fronts without the lights cut into it, and as I don’t need headlights, that will be how it stays. Nick Keyers car looks much better for that treatment.

This one is going to be a race car (again). Last raced by Raz in the RAF championship, after he converted from a season or two of hillclimbing. This time it will be running a CA18DET 16 valve Nissan turbo motor, rather than the 8 valve. It’s been in the custody of Steve Oakes in recent years, where it was to be a hillclimber again, but it's not turned a wheel in anger since circa 2009. It's 16 valve CA18DET build stalled with Raz, then got sidelined by other cars at the Oakes'.

Here are a couple of photos Steve sent me before I collected it:

I’m not really one for the project threads, as I prefer to get on & do my thing and drive it afterwards. But I feel duty bound, as I will be cadging a fair bit of info. from my old sparring partner Mr Hughes (already have before I decided to buy it) and I‘ve been looking through other people's project threads getting info. too. However, postings may well be sporadic.

The plan is to go for a Modified Sports Saloon spec. running slicks, low weight and big power. It won’t be road legal in the slightest. However, there is going have to be an initial base spec just to get it all running ASAP. I just need to see how quickly I can get it on the track, then I will tinker with it after that to add more lightness, grip, stop-ostiy & go-osity as required.

Re: 551 A race oddity

My first hour of ownership was interesting… I was driving along the M6 in the slow lane (SS1 on trailer) minding my own business, when a white Range Rover Sport pulled alongside in the middle lane. The woman in the passenger seat had the window down waving to get my attention, then proceeded to conduct a game of charades. The actions went something along the lines of, “the world has exploded”; “back there where we’ve just come from”. I checked the car in my rear view mirror, all looked fine. I turned back to the lady, nodded and smiled, but thought I better pull over on the hard shoulder to investigate. Upon alighting, it became apparent that the hardtop was no longer on the car. I hadn’t seen, heard or felt it become detached. Quickly transferring all the loose parts from the SS1 into my boot, I carried on wondering if it was going to be worth going back to see what was left, I decided to at least have a look.

I came off at the next junction and did a big loop, and much to my surprise, I found the thing on the verge. Rear window (plastic) broken, but I was going to replace it anyway and scuffs on the roof, otherwise fine. The rear deck panel that it had been bonded onto didn’t fare well though. Unfortunately it was too wide to go in the boot of my jeep, so I had to strap back on the car, on the hard shoulder (good thing it was a Sunday). I also fitted a cargo net that I should have fitted from the off; made sure that the strap I previously fitted wouldn’t slide off this time, and added another. This all got me home ok!

Here’s what it looked like after I got home:

Scuffs should polish out?

The boot lid wasn’t lost, I stopped off at Craig’s and swapped the ex-Batmobile bootlid for a standard one, and another rear deck panel. So the Batmobile appendages may be re-appearing on Craig’s Sabre. I didn’t need them as I plan to go for a big wing to look like a proper McDonald's hang-out boy.

I raced against Raz in this car (in 8 valve spec) at Cadwell park in 2008; It was the first season of racing for both of us and I was in my “British Racing Mustard” SE5a (ex-John Milligan sprint car - now owned & raced by Colin Swinnerton):

I’d already picked up some wheels for it before I picked the car up. I need a pair of wider outer rims for the back, but otherwise all good.

They’ll be wearing these slightly used Formula Renault Slicks initially, that I collected on my way home with the car. I’ll see how it performs with those; they are considerably cheaper than new Avons, and should be about the right compound for racing.

welcome to the dark side :-)

did this engine ever run? I thought it had problems with the inlet manifold?

It was the engine out his 200SX road car, not an engine he previously raced with. I think the problems were on the 8Valve. It will be pulled out & checked through though.

Can't believe the top came off particularly with that strap over it

Looks like the top has suffered some damage but nothing that can't be repaired.

Lucky I guess it could have been very nasty if the top had landed in lane 2/3

The engine was from Raz's road car and was known to be good AFAIK Jim; I think its detailed in the 2 threads that you posted links too in Raz's for sale thread

They all come over to the Dark Side in the end...

Welcome BBP, it was only a matter of time although you did resist the Dark force longer than most.

Really looking forward to your build, Big Bob and the Marcos are superbly executed cars, so im sure the SS1 will be just as good 8)

Good luck :-)

As tradition dictates the car will have to have a name, although too early in the project to tell what it will be yet. Tango named my SS1 Batmobile iirc and you came up with 'Light Sabre' for my current car, so we will all have to get out thinking caps on.
Initial thoughts

Little Bob
Son of Bob

But summat better will come along im sure :-)

EDIT
Whatever the final colour, it may help with a name: Green Meanie, Blue Thunder, Red Rocket.

I look forward to seeing how this turns out. I saw it at Steve's place. There's so much potential and lots of desirable bits already on it.

You've got about 7 weeks before the season starts

Baby Bob?

Leave the "battle scar" on the roof - will confuse the hell out of anyone in the paddock who wonders how the hell you got "armco rash" there!

If you're going to stick with the Star wars theme then how about Boba Fett - though he died in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th film so maybe not such a good idea!

Good luck with the project - the pointy cars are quite addictive & the looks start to grow on you (when viewed from certain angles) :)
