Got tired of glassing so exhaust and inlet manifolds and the spare cylinder heads were removed from the block in the chassis ready for the overhauled heads to be finished.

More grp work done, both body/suspension tower repairs are structurally finished with just the tissue layers to do. I've made a shaped panel, using a large roasting tin for the mold, to fill the heat-damaged transmission tunnel and have spent hours cutting it to final shape. It doesn't intrude too much into the footwell but does give added clearance for the new three branch exhaust manifolds. I've used all of the glass matting (hurray!) so ordered more and will be putting my feet up fer a bit!

So decided to reinforce the passenger side suspension tower body support as the historic join crack was through to the edge. Failed to get a decent layup free hand, the glass just wouldn't stay put so used a length of garden hose and some clamps, success!

Next was to glass the steering column clamp back into the body but the damaged hole showed no signs of where it went or the correct angle. The instrument panel was re-fitted and the lower shaft was put in the chassis steady, column was offered through the hole and the steering shaft fitted to the u/j to provide the correct alignment. Once the column was bolted to the dash, I carefully measured angles and alignment and secured the bottom of the shaft. Three layers of grp so far with more tomorrow.

Last jobs for today was to trim the broken bits of the chin panel, screw them together in the correct shape and glass a few layers over the joins, then the first two layers over the broken body/heater ducting where the g/box had smashed it historically.

Great stuff BC. I’m doing some glass work on a 5a and I think I’m going to weld a load spreading plate to the steering column where it goes through the bulkhead. I’ve seen too many cars with layers of GRP there but the column still moves a little.

Yep, know what yer mean, Jim. The RRBT has an extra support at the pedal box. Coupe will have plenty thickness(a bit loike its owner!😎😁).

If you weld extra stuff on the tube, can it be manoeuvred out still?

I’ve braced 2 5a’s from the column to the bottom fixing bolt of the pedal box with an exhaust clamp around the tube and a bit of flat bar - doesn’t need the glassed in tube at all after that; it’s rock solid.

More prep work done on the chin panel under the front bumper, I've put two more layers on the inside face then, after curing, got steel straps bent and screwed the panel on. Checked and adjusted the straps to get the contour right then made an internal patch to start filling the additional adjacent holes. I removed the rad ducting as it wobbled like a nervous bridegroom, both to gain access and to repair it.
