Philip's thread of 660XYB stuff

Post by Old and Slow » Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:43 pm

Whilst waiting for 82 mm (3 1/4") UJs to arrive I tried deep-freezing the spare UJ to see if it fitted any easier into the yoke. It didn't, so I won't bother with that - I might get frostbite!!
The UJs arrived this lunchtime so I fitted the one at the gearbox end, and I'll go for a test drive once I've dropped the car off the axle stands. Can't imagine the noise was caused by the prop shaft, though.

Philip's thread of 660XYB stuff

This week's update - changing the UJ hasn't made any difference, so the O/D has to come out. But it can't because the handbrake assembly is in the way, and is welded to the chassis.
It seems to me that the current arrangement means I have to take the engine and transmission out to get at the OD, or change the clutch etc.
Chris kindly loaned his engine hoist las time, but I don't want to go down that route every time I need to do something, so I'll cut the handbrake bracket to get it out and make a new detachable mounting arrangement, to make it (removal of gearbox, changing clutches etc) easier next time!

So the dimensions of your Jag box mean it won't come out through the cabin?

Is it not possible to remove the gearbox cross member and take out the gearbox from below?

The cross-member is welded to the other chassis rails, so not removable; the gearbox would come out upwards if it didn't have an O/D on it.
You can see the size, the top gearbox of 3 on today's "The coupe/SS gearchange mechanism" thread (don't know how to add a link!)
Perhaps Geert van hout has a gearchange mechanism to dispose of - I plan to visit him when restrictions are lifted.

Philip, the top gearbox in the photo is from a Straight Six coupé. I bought it with the intention of fitting it to our Sabre Six convertible. Unfortunately it wouldn’t fit between the main chassis members so I went for the middle ‘box which was from a Scimitar SE6a.

I added the picture to Philip’s post but he obviously didn’t like it :D

Hi Jim,
The message came up that you'd made an improvement, but obviously I clicked on the wrong button.
You'd think by now I'd "worked out" how to use this Forum!!
Tony - your comment re: chassis members on the Sabre 4 might enlighten me with my chassis - the rails must be different to accommodate the O/D and the extra cross members might be there to strengthen everything. If I get a moment I'll try to photograph the layout under the car.
Back to the drawing board - I'm using CAD (cardboard-aided design) to design a plate so I can re-fit the handbrake once I chop it out. :?

Philip - this probably won't help you, but my cross member definitely unbolts. I believe all Sabre Sixes with the standard box do? You can see some of it in the pic in the post above, with the rear-facing extension plate for the overdrive mount I added to it when I fitted the SE6a J-type overdrive gearbox.

If your cross-member doesn't unbolt then that's presumably to do with your Jaguar box as fitted in period? I love all this detective stuff.

Here's a picture of the underside adjacent to the O/D. You can see the (disconnected) speedo drive and the OD which is raised up a few inches.
Don't think I've ever seen so many chassis members in one place !

It appears to have a Laycock overdrive attached. I wonder.......

Interesting - I have to agree, that's never going to unbolt

Cross-member looks to be located quite a bit further back than mine too, right under the handbrake bracket, to suit the mount on the rear of your overdrive.

At the risk of hi-jacking your thread Philip, hopefully this might be helpful. When I bought my Sabre Six it had long-since lost its Borg-Warner overdrive and was just fitted with the 4-speed box with a long tail-piece extension:

Following Geoff Cooper all the way back from Prague after the 2002 Classic Marathon made me realise I really did need an overdrive, so I fitted a box out of a GTE with the J-type overdrive from Laycock. Can't recall if it was from an SE5a or SE6. I do though recall the late Chris Lloyd telling me that the earlier Coupe box with the physically larger LH-type Laycock overdrive didn't really fit, as Tony confirmed above.

The only real issue was that the mount for the gearbox now falls further to the rear, on the overdrive in fact, so I had to fabricate an extension to the cross-member:

A bit more post high jacking,

Chris, I think, with its flanged output shaft, your gearbox is from an SE5a. The middle gearbox of the three in Philip’s earlier post is an SE6a box with a splined outfit shaft. This means that the standard prop shaft can be used.

Lots of interesting additional information, looks like we are getting there.
The OD is out now, I'm draining the last bit of oil out ready for sending off.

Chris, out of interest, what rpm are you doing at 60 mph with OD engaged?
