660XYB Engine fix

Post by Old and Slow » Mon Feb 25, 2019 7:05 pm

And there's me thinking I could go all "Cheshire" and fit bright blue hoses! 8)
The good news is that the water leak appears to be cured; going round the block I ran it up to a fairly high temperature (to get a bit of pressure in the system) before switching in the manual fan and underneath it is as dry as dust, good result (fingers still crossed, though).

Inertia Switch arrangement

Post by Old and Slow » Mon Feb 25, 2019 8:00 pm

I'm fitting a Ford inertia switch to the Sabre Six, in the fuel pump circuit for safety, but it crossed my mind perhaps it should interrupt the ignition as well.
Any views on this?
Also, would it be a good idea to operate a relay and use the contacts to feed the ignition? What is current best practice? (See what I did there....I'll get my coat).

Inertia Switch arrangement

Stopping the fuel is both the normal and logical way of doing things. Sparks aren’t flammable..

I’m not a fan of putting additional failure points into the ignition system either.

Inertia Switch arrangement

Does that actually give you anything extra? If you've got an engine that can continue to run when the fuel supply is cut off, then I think you should patent it quick! :D

Thanks for the feedback;
I'll go with the flow, and just interrupt the fuel pumps.

Philip's thread of 660XYB stuff

Noisy overdrive:
(This is tacked onto the end of the previous thread as I don't know how to start a new topic in a project thread !) :(
Anyone have experience of diagnosing problems with overdrives?
I've posted a youtube video and if you listen carefully you can hear a resonance around 3 beats per second:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuTQ-9DeYIQ
The noise only appears when in overdrive, not in top or any other gear.
Note though: the Sabre Six has a Mk 2 Jaguar gearbox and overdrive, so I'm clutching at straws here, perhaps.
Engine speed - around 3000 rpm, road speed 60 mph O/D is 0.86 so the prop shaft speed is approx 2500 rpm (or 40'ish revs per second)
Diff is 4.1:1 so axle speed is 10 revs per second.
New clutch 500 miles ago, changed gearbox and diff oil last week, running out of ideas.
I'm thinking of bypassing the O/D inhibit switch so that I can engage it in all gears and see if the noise appears all the time.
Any other suggestions for diagnosing?
I've been in touch with SC parts: https://www.scparts.co.uk/sc_en/ for suggestions, nothing suggested so far, apart from a possible slipping clutch

The 329M
I don't miss it

I can't help with your fault, but I wonder if it might have something to do with the fluid change, as that was the last thing you did?

Hope your well Philip

to change the thread title, simply edit it in the first post.

Thanks Jim,
Guy - the noise started in early March, so I changed the fluids to see if this might stop it. Alas, it made no difference.

Logical to assume it’s the overdrive - and I think I’d do that test again in o/d 3rd with the inhibit switch bypassed to confirm?

Does the Jag OD only operate in 4th gear ??.

Hi Mark,
Yes, only on top gear; the O/D inhibit switch is mounted on top of the gearbox and easily accessible by taking the tunnel off, so that's the next step - try it in 2nd/3rd/4th and hear what happens!
For info, the Mk 2 Jag gearbox with O/D is type GBN made by Moss, no synchro on 1st

Well, today I went along the A329M again, having bypassed the inhibit switch so I could select O/D in all gears;
Unfortunately the resonance noise doesn't appear in any other gear apart from top (at least I can't hear anything).
The next step is to contact the Laycock experts to see if they have any experience of similar noises.
I'll let you know if anything transpires.

Shame it`s a Jag OD unit.
I have Two reconditioned units from Laycock at Sheffield.
