I think you're right Phil, as long as the ancient parts still work of course

My ECU has been modded by Horsham for mapping. It's all pretty straight forward. I did have an issue with the standard ignition coils, see my project thread for that.

I sent Ben C some wiring info a couple of weeks ago. I'll forward this on to you.
Cheers Ben, received. Thanks very much.

Thinking about it, I must have a standard MAF knocking around somewhere, as I used a Z32 one. If you want to use one, let me know & I'll have a look.

The only parts I had issue with are the ign coils & the earth on the coil sub-loom.

The connectors on to the engine components are a bit of a pain, as the lock wire has to be prised off, unlike the Bosch type connectors where the wire is just squeezed in before pulling the connector off.

Thanks Ben. I’ve been looking at the Audi/VAG coil conversion that deletes the igniter. It’s about £250 including the mounting bracket, but could be done for as little as £170. I’ll see how I get in with the stock stuff first though.

Thanks for the MAF offer. But if a standard ECU will cope with a Z32, I’ll fit one of those from the start and save you the hassle.

I cracked open an ECU that I picked up on eBay for £15 (it was worth a punt). The idea was that I could socket it for a Horesham chip, and still keep a known good standard one at hand. This is what I found inside (looks like it’s already been modded in the past) :-

Maybe it’s a flashable chip (eprom).

Pull the label off and get the number off the chip.

Probably a one- burn chip at a guess though.

Corky's Scimitars and other short stories

OK, so a bit more research done and I've dropped very lucky with the MAF. The NOS one I bought from RPW a couple of years ago is the same part number for the CA18DET up until 1991, so in other words I have an almost new MAF that'll work with my loom and it won't need a lambda sensor. So I'm thinking that I get it running with this MAF and standard injectors, then go from there as I develop it (maybe with a stage 2 chip, before moving to a stage 3 with Z32 and the Skyline injectors. I'm told the Z32 will not work without the stage 3 chip or similar modification to the ECU )

Corky's Scimitars and other short stories

Post by Corky » Tue Oct 06, 2020 4:05 pm

Finally got a full day in the garage today and was able to finish the final checks and main assembly of the +1mm engine.

I still need to paint the various covers etc. but the head is on and torqued up, new cam belt and tensioner kit installed, and sump fitted with new seals and official Nissan sealant goo (I have some 1 piece gaskets but decided to go with what was in the Nissan gasket set).

Top tip for anyone refitting the head on one of these:- Whilst the head is on the bench, drop in the head bolt washers by placing them over a long thin screwdriver (located in the bolt hole) to use as a guide, it's far too easy to drop the washer into one of the recesses and spend hours trying to retrieve it (ask me how I know  ). Then place the bolts into the hoes to secure the washers, drop head onto engine.

I finally feel like progress is being made.......

Next jobs; strip the inlet manifold, check all of the injectors and sensors and rebuild with new gaskets, then fit to engine. Clock the turbo for top mount fitting (see photo of mock up).

...............and in other news the S2000 has been sold and will be picked up next week. This'll be replaced by a 5A that I sold in 2006. The 5A was beautiful when I sold it, but it hasn't fared too well and it appeared on eBay last week, so I just had to save it. I should be taking delivery in a few weeks time, so I'll post some better photos when it arrives.

Shocking comparison photos! :( Really don't understand how anyone can let that happen. Still, looks like it will only be a matter of time before it's back to its best. Must be terribly frustrating, though.

Phew! Redeemed yourself at the 11th hour

Cabrios leave me cold but the coupes a much better looking proposition.

Bet BMW wish theyd taken the coupe route with current model instead of letting toyota have it for the Supra
