Thanks for that. As I've got the lamps out at present to tackle the blowers I will try the LEDs as well. Cheers!

Sorry, a bit of a thread hijack I know, but one last query on the LED lights - There seem to be literally thousands of options for this conversion on fleabay - any particular reason for your specific choice? Thanks

Not really any firm reasons apart from perceived confidence in the seller and good spec devices.

Thanks. I've bought LEDs in the past for the dash and sidelights etc for other cars, so I know quality can be flaky at times, so I'll go with your experience and blame you when it all goes wrong... er, I mean... "if" ...

Not much achieved this week. Wired up the centre panel and fitted LED illumination to the switches and instruments.

Looking good!

Only a couple of my switches illuminate, so I guess I need to replace the bulbs!....Are LED's a straight swap?

Cheers,

Jez

You can put LEDs in as a direct swap, but I graft 3mm wide angle LEDs into the switch itself, which gets rid of the irritating bulbholders that always ping off etc.

The fog lamp switch was drilled 3mm and a 3mm flat top LED inserted, so as to get rid of the afterthought indicator at the bottom.

A word of warning... I bought a pair of new switches described as Scimitar fit. Unfortunately they are actually Triumph TR7 switches. The logo is wrong, not that it matters and the translucent window behind the logo is missing, meaning that they do not illuminate. I have used the (expensive) innards in some original shells to overcome it.

That's coming along nicely! :D

When you've replaced the switch illumination with LEDs, are they cool enough to allow you to block off the holes where the old bulbholders went, as one of the problems with the switches is dirt getting in through the bulbholder holes?

Yes Roger, I have covered the holes with furry loom tape for now.

This may be a sign of my electrical innocence, I've never encountered "furry loom tape" before, only the smooth, shiny, non-sticky, variety.

Hmmmm - thanks Phil, I always thought the main advantage of "proper" loom tape was that it had no adhesive, so your loom doesn't go into a horrible sticky mess over time? It seems a bit odd to combine adhesive and a furry cloth back, which will presumably overlap each other in use? Or am I missing something? (ussually the case with electrics! )

Modern car looms use the furry stuff although I can't think of the exact reason (probably to stop random noises in the cabin as much as anything), plus it's a bit more resilient to damage.
