Picked up an adaptor plate for the zetec to take an RX8 box the other day so thought I’d mock it up on a spare block. Cut away a bit for the starter too.

This is interesting! Have been looking at stronger gearbox compared to the type 9, but haven’t looked outside the ford options yet - Tremec T5 (expensive) or MT75 (big! But lighter than a Type 9).

MT75 was in my TVR, gearchnge was poor compared to type 9, more 'rifling through the cutlery drawer' than 'rifle bolt' action of type 9 with quaife gearlever

Even after getting rid of the rubber bushes in the housing and linkage?

Next step is to drop it in a chassis to check for clearance. The gearchange is more like a type 9 with Quaife.

Playing with ratio calculator to see if there’s any advantage in carrying an extra gear around. Same rpm, diff and tyres for direct comparison. Looks like the 5 speed wins?

Looks nice from a ratio point of view on the 6 speed? As daft as it seems (adding an extra gear) you’ll probably end up changing gear less as you’ll probably find a single gear to go further? You could probably do 80% of Curborough in the new 3rd gear alone?

You have an even lower geared first though, I think if you can take off in second it might be a good 5 speed box but I need to weigh them both.

1st is only very slightly lower than the type 9 but as you say, the lower second could make it worthwhile to start with.

Or swap you for a 3.62

TBF I’ve come to the conclusion a second set of wheels and tyres with differing rolling radius is quicker to change than a diff

I just put some numbers in for a comparison, can’t actually remember what I’ve got fitted as I’ve just bought new tyres for the Merc, looking at tyres for DJ the other day, new tyres for 8 ball and “not diesel” :D

205/55x15 sounds like what you’ve got on 8 ball TBH?

Probably :D at least I didn’t put 225/45 r17 in :D

Should be 195/50x15. 8 ball has 205/60x15.
