Don’t plates have to have the supplier detailed on them?

That requirement only came in in around 2003 and if you can order "show plates" you can still get them without the manufacturer details - and depending on how eagle eyed/strict your MOT tester is (or if your car is pre 2003) you might get away with it.

And it doesn't have to be obvious - I needed a new plate for the SS1 last year, when I forgot about the box of junk I'd left on the garage floor
I got the replacement from Halfords, and it is labelled -

Dare I ask WHY number plates have to show the supplier's name ?
Even the french administration haven't thought of that one (yet)

It was brought in many years ago when they clamped down on production of number plates to try and combat fake registrations/cloning/theft/etc. In UK only licensed suppliers can make a number plate and it has to conform to the British Standard BS Au 145d.

And also you can't just walk in off the street and order a vehicle plate, you have to produce proof of ID and Vehicle ownership (normally the V5)

Ooh, I've loads of old number plates, anyone want to buy them?

Over here the plates have to be riveted in place so nobody can steal them.
Of course, nobody has a cordless drill ...
