GTC Hardtop Window Rubbers

Post by ard126k » Sun Feb 09, 2020 12:13 pm

Do you have a hardtop for your GTC? Have the window rubbers got perished and seen better days? Have you found that new rubbers are impossible to find?

I can say 'yes' to all these questions so I've been speaking to Nigel at QRG about the possibility of having a batch of the rubber profile re-manufactured. Of course there will have to be a certain quantity made so the first thing to find out is how many owners would be in the market for some. So if your windows are leaky or you fancy a tidy-up of appearance please reply! Would you want all the windows doing, or just some? Luckily the profile seems to be the same on rear and sides.

No idea about cost at the moment, just gathering evidence to see if it's worth going any further.

Alex.

Alex, thanks for posting :D
Count me as interested in a full set. The rear has been in & out a few times (was out when I acquired the GTC) and as mentioned on e-mail, the sides are beginning to perish.

Thanks for all your interest.

I've heard back from Nigel, who reckons that for a company to set up for production would cost £2K plus VAT and he (not surprisingly) doesn't see that as a sensible investment. So nothing's going to happen immediately.

Guy the GTC registrar is going to put an article in Slice to see if there are any more non-Forum owners interested and I'm going to research some more moulding companies to see if they're all equally expensive. Unless anyone has a contact who moulds rubber?

Not giving up yet!!

Alex.

Have you tried www.sealsplusdirect.co.uk ....they are very helpful.....they may already have something.
Rarely have my hood up, let alone hard top on.....never used top since bought car in early 2004 ...that was 50,451 miles ago.
Wonder if any other vehicle's hard tops use the same section.....would seem likely for such a non technical thing or did Reliant have their own design made up rather than just use an already existing common seal section??

Yes, I've had samples from Sealsplus and Phoenixtrim, also looked at Woolies and Coh-Baines and a few others on't web until I got down to the Chinese sites!
I'd be surprised if RMC bothered having their own seals made and logically they might have used something from the 3-wheelers or the 2-seaters. But both QRG and Partsworld say they don't think so.
Dennis - would you be interested in parting with your unused hardtop?

Alex.

Alex..sorry no to parting with hardtop...want to keep it with car in case of future car sale (not envisaged for some time.)

Quite understand Dennis, in fact that's why I'm looking for these seals as I'll be putting the C up for sale soon.

In the meantime here's the seal section in case someone says 'oh that's a xxxxxx seal'

Some good news for you.

I've had a couple of quotes that are much more reasonable than Nigel's one. Not wanting to stand on any toes I'm now wondering whether there's an 'official' route to parts remanufacture via the Club (funds) or if successful projects go ahead at individuals' risk (mine in this case)?

Alex.

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.
